Wetting of Emulsions Droplets: From Macroscopic to Colloidal Scale

Philippe Poulin、Jérôme Bibette1997-10-27Physical Review Letters

By using large oil-in-water droplets covered with ionic surfactant we measure contact angles to deduce the adhesive energy between macroscopic interfaces as a function of the temperature $T$ and the salt concentration $C$. A wetting transition takes place at a well defined temperature ${T}^{*}(C)$. At the colloidal sc…

Fabrication of waveguides in glasses by a poling procedure

Walter Margulis、Fredrik Laurell1997-10-27Applied Physics Letters

Single mode channel waveguides were fabricated in soda lime glass by poling the samples at 280 °C with 2.5 kV bias voltage. The refractive index of the glass was reduced by 1.5% due to the depletion of sodium ions, making possible the formation of waveguides in a depressed cladding configuration.

This letter reports a new way of preparing wafer sized SiGe quantum dots on an ordered mesoporous sol gel silica coated Si. It was found from x-ray diffraction that very good regular layers of mesoscopic sized SiGe quantum dots can be formed in the silica. Initial low temperature photoluminescence measurements show mu…

S. Logothetidis、G. Stergioudis1997-10-27Applied Physics Letters

Specular x-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements were used to study the density and surface roughness of ultrathin hydrogen-free amorphous carbon films deposited by sputtering, of thickness varying from 25 to 325 Å. The film thickness and surface roughness obtained from XRR measurements are in good agreement with that f…

Particle-size-induced diffuse phase transition in the fine-particle barium titanate porcelains

Yung Park、Won-Jae Lee、Ho‐Gi Kim1997-10-27Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

The effect of particle size on the ferroelectric transition in fine-particle porcelain produced by the inorganic sol - gel method was investigated. The phase transition was measured by dielectric properties, variable temperature x-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tetragonal distortion…

Network morphology of polymer stabilized liquid crystals

Ingo Dierking、Laura L. Kosbar、Ali Afzali-Ardakani 等 5 位作者1997-10-27Applied Physics Letters

Monomer solubility is identified as the primary factor determining network morphology in polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal textures. Poorly soluble monomers form coarse structures composed of discrete, oblong grains, whereas soluble monomers yield smooth, continuous polymer networks. A crossover from smoot…

Ankit Goyal、M. Rajeswari、R. Shreekala 等 9 位作者1997-10-27Applied Physics Letters

We are optimizing thin films of perovskite manganese oxides for bolometric applications. We have studied the relevant material characteristics of several members of this family namely, La0.7Ba0.3MnO3, La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, and Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Here, we discuss issues related to the choice of material, the inf…

A model for single-domain uniaxial ferromagnetic particles with high anisotropy, the Ising model, is studied.
