Large ferroelectric single crystals of 0.48 Pb(Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 –0.52 PbTiO 3 solid solution system were first successfully grown using a modified Bridgman technique and their properties were investigated. The obtained crystals were about 25 mm in diameter, 100 mm in length and black in color. The crystal exhibited…

We have synthesized new high Δ n 3-ring phenylacetylene(3PA) liquid crystals which have substituent groups with core center phenyl ring and investigated the effects of substitution on physical properties. Nematic range and viscosity were improved remarkably with keeping high Δ n by introducing trifluoromrthoxy group.…

The corrosion performance of ceramic films of SiO 2 ‐Al 2 O 3 prepared by the sol‐gel processing of organometallic compounds and deposited by dip‐coating technique on 1008 steel foils has been evaluated. Two kinds of procedures were developed to produce the sol‐gel coatings. The influence of the coatings on the chemic…

Thallium(I) complexes of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin are shown to have two thallium(I) ions per porphyrin ligand. Syntheses, spectroscopic characteristics (UV-vis, MS, NMR), chemistry, and an X-ray crystal structure of bis-thallium(I) porphyrins are presented.

In this paper we report photo-alignment using low molecular weight dichroic materials. We produced photo-alignment by exposing thin films of dichroic materials such as methyl red, 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene and 4,4′-biphenol to linearly polarized light. The irradiation generates a preferred orientation of liquid crystal…

Smectogenic organic compounds are made of rod-like molecules, which often have dipolar groups with lateral components. We argue that since the groups are generally off-axis , the electrostatic contribution to the intermolecular interaction between the neighbours in a smectic layer favours a tilting of the molecules. W…
