As the largest CuS cluster known to date, [Cu12S8]4⊖ occupies a special position. It is the first copper(I) complex containing exclusively sulfidic ligands that has been isolated. The Ph4P salt is formed on reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with EtS⊖ and Li2S in the presence of Ph4PBr.

Acetals that react with cotton to form cellulose crosslinks are derived from dialdehydes that can form five-or-six-membered tetrahydrofuran or tetrahydropyran rings. These aldehydes themselves are reactive to cotton, but the acetals do not form the aldehyde to react. The acetals were less reactive than the aldehydes a…
Metallic films are today used in various technological applications. The grain structures of these films influence many properties including the hardness, corrosion resistance, and the electrical conductivity reactivity of thin films in electrical devices. It is therefore important to understand how the films grow and…
The angular dependences of the sputter yield of (100) single crystal diamond under argon and oxygen ion beams were investigated. For argon ion beams a large increase in the sputter yield was observed as the angle of incidence was increased from the normal, with a maximum occurring at approximately 60° from the normal.…
Absolute differential cross sections (DCS's) for electron-impact excitation of the lowest forty electronic levels in atomic neon have been determined for incident electron energies of 30 and 50 eV, for the four lowest levels at 25 eV, and two levels at 100 eV. The cross sections for these forty electronic levels are g…
Lead–oxygen compounds and the exposures of clean polycrystalline Pb0 to O2, H2O, and air at various temperatures have been studied with x-ray photoelectron (XPS) and electron energy loss (EELS) spectroscopies. Results indicate that the shape of the Auger O KVV lines and EELS are sufficiently different to distinguish P…
Abstract X‐ray analyses of methylene‐bis(4)phenyl isocynate(MDI)/diol/poly(tetramethylene adipate) polyurethane elastomers prepared using hexanediol (HDO), butanediol (BDO), and propanediol (PDO) point to the development of a second crystalline structure in the hard segments as a result of thermal elongation and annea…
Measurements are presented of the magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility tensor $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ of TbP${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ crystals which were ME annealed by a method introduced in the present paper and termed "balanced" ME annealing. The form of $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\leftri…

For the application of Rietveld profile analysis to neutron powder diffraction data a precise knowledge of the peak profile, in both shape and position, is required. The method now in use employs a Gaussian-shaped profile with a semi-empirical asymmetry correction for low-angle peaks. The integrated intensity is taken…
The minimum potential for the evolution of oxygen on six oxides ( RuO 2 Li 0.1 Ni 0.9 O , Li 0.3 Co 2.7 O 4 , IrO 2 , PbO 2 , and PtO 2 ) in 5 N KOH has been studied by potentiostatic steady‐state and galvanostatic charging experiments. The results show that there is an excellent correlation between the minimum potent…

A one-dimensional model is developed for boiling heat removal and dryout in particulate debris. The model can be used for predicting the coolability of postaccident debris from a nuclear reactor (either light water or liquid-metal fast breeder). The model includes the effects of both laminar and turbulent flow, two-ph…
The physical and electrochemichromic properties of the amorphous and crystalline tungsten oxide films prepared by thermal evaporation of WO3 powder under a reducing atmosphere have been investigated. The oxide films with 850–24 500 Å thick were deposited on the substrates maintained at a temperature ranging from 50 to…
The reactions leading to the formation of crystalline Mg 3 (OH) 5 Cl·4H 2 O (phase 5), Mg 2 (OH) 3 ,Cl·4H 2 O (phase 3), and Mg(OH) 2 are compared for the systems MgO‐MgCl 2 ‐H 2 O and NaOH‐MgCl 2 ‐H 2 O. The crystalline phases were determined by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The concentration of the total magnesium and…
Passive layers on nickel and their change by the action of fluoride have been studied by surface analyses such as x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy ion scattering (ISS). The thickness of the layers is deduced from the height of the XPS signals Ni 2 p 3 / 2 , O1s, and F1s and their attenuation by co…
Abstract Complex formation between halloysites, from soil and geological sources, and a series of amides has been investigated. All the amides used can be intercalated to give single-layer complexes with basal spacings between 10·4 Å (for formamide) and 12·4 Å (for N,N -dimethylacetamide). When the interlayer space of…
