Ion implantation effects in alkali-borosilicate glasses

G. W. Arnold1986-09-01Radiation Effects

Complex alkali-borosilicate glasses are being studied, and used, as media for radioactive waste encapsulation. The effects of radiation from α-decay processes on the physical properties of such glasses is of interest. The energy deposited in the glass by such decay processes can be simulated by ion implantation. We ha…

Phylogenetic relationships and classification of monoraphid diatoms based on phenetic and cladistic methodologies

John Patrick Kociolek、Eugene F. Stoermer1986-09-01Phycologia

A review of previously published hypotheses concerning phylogenetic relationships in the diatom family Achnanthaceae is presented. Data for characters such as valve ultrastructure, chloroplast number and morphology, and sexual reproduction for the genera Cocconeis, Achnanthes and Rhoicosphenia and their purported bira…

Kinetics of Ion Exchange on Clay Minerals and Soil: II. Elucidation of Rate‐limiting Steps

R. A. Ogwada、Donald L. Sparks1986-09-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Kinetics of K + adsorption were investigated on kaolinite, a Chester loam soil and vermiculite using static, stirred, and vortex batch techniques. The objective of this study was to elucidate the rate‐limiting steps for K + adsorption on the clay minerals and soil. We hypothesized that it is possible under la…

Annealing of the β‐modification of polypropylene

J. Varga、Ferenc Tóth、D. O. Hummel1986-09-01Makromolekulare Chemie Macromolecular Symposia

Abstract Expressive memory effect has been proven in the course of the annealing of the β‐modification of polypropylene (β‐PP). The character of the structural changes taking place in β‐PP during annealing strongly depends on the thermal history. In dependence on the thermal history βα or ββ‐recrystallization takes pl…

On the nature of bleaching of amorphous Ge30S70 films

L. Tichý、A. Tříska、H. Tichá 等 4 位作者1986-09-01Philosophical Magazine B

The irreversible photobleaching of amorphous Ge30S70 films is found to depend on the air pressure during exposure. This is most probably a result of photo-oxidation and/or hydrolysis of the layers. The appearance of a Ge-O-Ge vibrational band in the infrared transmission spectra of exposed layers clearly indicates the…

Histochemical and ultrastructural evidence for the function of the labiate process in the movement of centric diatoms

Linda Medlin、Richard M. Crawford、Robert A. Andersen1986-09-01British Phycological Journal

Movement in a centric diatom, Actinocyclus subtilis, is reported here for the first time. The movement is directional and strong circumstantial evidence from histochemistry and electron microscopy supports the proposal that motility is achieved by the production of mucopolysaccharides through the labiate processes.

Differential Cross-Sections for One- and Two-Electron Capture by Highly Charged Ions (N 7+ , O 7+ , O 8+ , Ne 7+ , Ne 8+ ) at Low keV Energies

P. Roncin、M. Barat、H. Laurent1986-09-01Europhysics Letters (EPL)

This letter reports the first measurements of differential cross-sections (DCS) for one- and two-electron capture by highly charged ions at low keV energies. These measurements have been achieved using a new type of spectrometer with a design based on a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. A comparison of the…

Dilation of polyethylene by sorption of carbon dioxide

Takuji Hirose、Keishin Mizoguchi、Yoshinori Kamiya1986-09-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract The dilation of low‐density polyethylene accompanied by the sorption of CO 2 was measured by microscopy under pressures up to 50 atm at temperatures from 25 to 55°C. The dilatometry measurement, which is also applied to the determination of the thermal expansion coefficient, is directly performed by a catheto…

Some Effects of Structure, Composition and Cure on the Water Absorption and Glass Transition Temperature of Amine‐cured Epoxies

Peter Johncock、Graham Tudgey1986-09-01British Polymer Journal

Abstract The effect of structure, composition, and cure on the water absorption and T g of amine‐cured epoxies was investigated. Water absorption is considered to depend on the polar group concentration and type, and on the amount of free volume in the polymer network. The contribution of polar groups in terms of thei…

The Eu(III) ion as luminescent probe: Laser-spectroscopic investigation of the metal ion sites in an 18-crown-6 complex

Jean‐Claude G. Bünzli、Georges-Olivier Pradervand1986-09-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The structure of [Eu(NO3)2(18-6)]3[Eu(NO3)6] has been probed by high-resolution excitation and emission spectra at 77 and 4.2 K. The compound contains centrosymmetric [Eu(NO3)6]3− ions with D2h, C2h, or Ci symmetry and three types of complex [Eu(NO3)2(18-6)]+ cations with D2 symmetry slightly distorted towards C2v. Th…

Block copolymers constructed from chains of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and either poly-ethyleneoxide (PEO) or poly-propyleneoxide (PPO) were synthesized. These block copolymers exhibited microdomain structure. Platelet adhesion on their surfaces was investigated by a column elution method to examine the…

Origins of endothermic peaks in differential scanning calorimetry

Rufina G. Alamo、L. Mandelkern1986-09-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract The origins of multiple peaks observed by differential scanning calorimetry have been examined in detail for a linear polyethylene fraction crystallized from dilute solution and for bulk‐crystallized copolymers of ethylene. At least two major bases are demonstrated. One is melting–recrystallization; the other…

Synthesis and antithrombogenicity of polyetherurethaneurea containing quaternary ammonium groups in the side chains and of the polymer/heparin complex

Yoshihiro Ito、Masahiko Sisido、Yukio Imanishi1986-09-01Journal of Biomedical Materials Research

Novel polyetherurethaneureas containing tertiary amino groups in the side chains (PAEUU) were synthesized, quaternized with different alkyl halides (Q-PAEUU), and heparinized (H-PAEUU). The antithrombogenicity of PAEUU in vitro was improved by quaternization, and further by heparinization. The excellent antithrombogen…
