Liquid crystal polymers. XVIII. Comparison of the properties of aromatic polyesters with different mesogenic units and a common flexible spacer

Chen Guoquan、Robert W. Lenz1984-11-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Chemistry Edition

Abstract Four closely related polyesters, with aromatic ester triads and decamethylene spacers, were prepared and characterized for their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties. Two of the polymers, which were based on linear biphenols, formed stable nematic phases, whereas one of the two based on nonlinear biphen…

Improved Tactile and Sorption Properties of Polyester Fabrics Through Caustic Treatment

Bruce M. Latta1984-11-01Textile Research Journal

Alkaline hydrolysis has been used for about 30 years as a procedure for modifying the physical properties of polyester fabrics. Despite the length of time the reaction has been-known, its kinetics and mechanism are not well understood. Studies conducted in our laboratory indicate that the hydrolysis of polyester occur…

The role of molecular diffusion in the adhesion of elastomers

Maria D. Ellul、A. N. Gent1984-11-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract Butyl rubber (polyisobutylene‐co‐isoprene) mixed with polyisobutylene was crosslinked to yield elastomeric macromolecular networks containing dissolved linear macromolecules. Adhesion of these materials to themselves (self‐adhesion) and to an inert substrate was investigated over a wide range of peel rates an…

Preparation and Mechanical Properties of Mg‐Al‐Si‐O‐N Glasses

Joseph Homeny、D. L. McGarry1984-11-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A three‐component glass system (Mg–Al–Si) was nitrided by adding amorphous and crystalline Si 3 N 4 . Glasses with varying amounts of nitrogen were melted, and their mechanical properties were measured. Density, hardness, Young's elastic modulus, and fracture toughness increased with increasing nitrogen content.

Miscible blends of amorphous polymers

C. Tremblay、Robert E. Prud’homme1984-11-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract Thirty‐five polymethacrylate/chlorinated polymer blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Poly(ethyl), poly( n ‐propyl), poly( n ‐butyl), and poly( n ‐amyl methacrylate)s were found to be miscible with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), chlorinated PVC, and Saran, but immiscible with a chlorina…

Optimal techniques for harvesting and preparation of reversed autogenous vein grafts for use as arterial substitutes: a review.

Adcock Ot、Adcock Gl、Wheeler 等 6 位作者1984-11-01PubMed

Since the first successful use of an autogenous vein graft for arterial reconstruction by Gluck in 1898 and the establishment of the scientific basis for the use of veins as arterial substitutes by Carrell and Guthrie in the early 1900s, reversed autogenous veins have been used extensively in arterial reconstructive o…

Tensile yield behavior of PP/SEBS blends

A. K. Gupta、S. N. Purwar1984-11-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Tensile yield behavior of the blends of polypropylene (PP) and styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene block copolymer (SEBS) is studied in blend composition range 0–25 wt % SEBS. Three sets of samples, (i) solution-blended compression-molded (SBCM), (ii) melt-blended compression-molded (MBCM), and (iii) melt-blended inject…

Anaerobic expression of maize fructose-1,6-diphosphate aldolase.

Philip M. Kelley、Michael Freeling1984-11-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

The anaerobic proteins of maize are a set of 10 major and 10 minor polypeptides selectively synthesized in anaerobic seedling roots. 1) Anaerobiosis resulted in the selected labeling of a protein which bound to Blue Sepharose and was eluted by fructose 1,6-diphosphate. 2) This protein elicited antiserum which recogniz…

The orientational order of nematogenic molecules with a flexible core

J.W. Emsley、G. R. Luckhurst、G. N. Shilstone1984-11-01Molecular Physics

The orientational order of the α,ω-bis(4,4′-cyanobiphenyloxy)alkanes, new nematogens with a flexible core linking two rigid groups has been studied using deuterium N.M.R. spectroscopy. The order parameter for the para-axis of the cyanobiphenyl group, determined at the nematic-isotropic transition, is found to be consi…

Johan Moan、Stein Sommer1984-11-01Photochemistry and Photobiology

Abstract —Human cells of the line NHIK 3025 were labelled with hematoporphyrin derivative (Hpd) or Photofrin II (PII). Absorption and fluorescence excitation spectra of cell‐bound porphyrins were recorded. Furthermore, the corresponding action spectra for photoinactivation of the cells were determined in the spectral…

Ionotropic Nucleation of Calcium Carbonate by Molluscan Matrix

Edward M. Greenfield、DOUGLAS COURTNEY WILSON、M.A. Crenshaw1984-11-01American Zoologist

The hydrophilic, sulfated fraction of the organic matrix found in molluscan shells appears to be involved in crystal nucleation. It is located primarily at the sites of initial nucleation. The hydrophilic fraction favors in vitro formation of calcified deposits, when it is fixed in place on the hydrophobic fraction. C…

Transition fromβ-tin to simple hexagonal silicon under pressure

R. J. Needs、Richard M. Martin1984-11-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Recently a simple hexagonal phase of Si has been discovered at \ensuremath{\sim}130-160 kbar of pressure. We have performed self-consistent density-functional calculations on the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-tin and simple hexagonal structures of Si, using the calculated stress tensor to determine the $\frac{c}{a}$ ratios as…
