Formation, structure, and crystallization of metastable quasi-crystalline Al–transition metal alloys prepared by rapid solidification

R. A. Dunlap、K. Dini1985-10-01Canadian Journal of Physics

Metastable Al 86 Cr 14 , Al 86 Mn 14 , and Al 86 Fe 14 were prepared by rapid quenching from the melt at a rate of approximately 2 × 10 6 K/s. The X-ray measurements of all three alloys show similar non-Bravais structures. Broadened diffraction peaks for the Al–Fe alloy suggest a crystallite size of about 60 Å. Therma…

Gas and vapor sorption in polymers just below Tg

J. S. Chiou、Yasushi Maeda、D. R. Paul1985-10-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Generally, sorption isotherms for gases like CO 2 in glassy polymers are concave to the pressure axis, whereas in the rubbery state these isotherms are linear for gases or sometimes convex to the pressure axis for more condensable vapors. Examples of CO 2 isotherms are reported here that show at low pressure…

Assembly of 2·5 nm filaments from giardin, a protein associated with cytoskeletal microtubules in Giardia

Richard Crossley、D. V. Holberton1985-10-01Journal of Cell Science

The giardins are a family of approximately 30000 Mr structural proteins found in microribbons attached to microtubules in the disc cytoskeleton of Giardia. After examining the solubility of giardins in various agents, a method has been developed to extract these polypeptides and subsequently precipitate them selective…

Coherent transient effects due to phase modulation of recoillessγradiation

Erkki Ikonen、P. Helistö、T. Katila 等 4 位作者1985-10-01Physical Review A

Coherent transient effects due to phase modulation of recoilless \ensuremath{\gamma} radiation are considered both theoretically and experimentally. Transients are observed in transmission experiments when the incident radiation field interferes with the induced polarization of the M\"ossbauer absorber. The transient…

Breathable Fabrics and Comfort in Clothing

J.H. Keighley1985-10-01Journal of Industrial Textiles

Breathable fabrics facilitate the loss of water vapor from clothing and reduce condensation. Three varieties, proofed cotton, microporous, and hydrophilic polypropylene, are measured for water vapor permeability, hydrostatic head, abrasion, and bending length. In general, breathability is insufficient to prevent conde…

Morphology, crystallization and thermal behaviour of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinyl acetate) blends

E. Martuscelli、Clara Silvestre、Carla Gismondi1985-10-01Die Makromolekulare Chemie

Abstract Blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) show a unique value of the glass transition temperature, intermediate between that of plain polymers. The addition of PVAc to PEO causes a depression in both the spherulite growth rate ( G ) and the overall kinetic rate constant ( K n ). Such…

Dynamic behavior of flexible polymers at a solid/liquid interface

E. Pefferkorn、A. Carroy、R. Varoqui1985-10-01Journal of Polymer Science Polymer Physics Edition

Abstract The mean time spent by a macromolecule at a solid/liquid interface is analyzed in the region of adsorption saturation. The method consists of carrying out preliminary adsorption with radioactively labeled high‐molecular‐weight polyacrylamide and subsequently exposing the surface to a solution of unlabeled pol…

Unified Analysis of Biofilm Kinetics

Makram T. Suidan、Yi‐Tin Wang1985-10-01Journal of Environmental Engineering

A simplified algebraic expression for biofilm kinetics is developed. This mathematical model assumes Monod‐type biological kinetics and diffusive mass transport. The algebraic expression relates the concentration of substrate at the biofilm surface, and the thickness of the biofilm to the substrate utilization rate. T…

Phase behavior of polyarylate blends

Lloyd M. Robeson1985-10-01Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Melt mixtures of a polyarylate based on bisphenol A and tere/isophthalates were made with poly(ethylene terephthalate), several cyclohexane dimethanol‐based polyesters, polycarbonate, and the poly(hydroxy ether) of bisphenol A. The phase behavior was determined using classical methods. With minimum time and t…

Use of wood fibers in thermoplastic composites II: Polyethylene

Alphons D. Beshay、B. V. Kokta、Claude Daneault1985-10-01Polymer Composites

Abstract Wood fibers of aspen in the form of chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) has been used as reinforcement in polyethylene (PE). The secant modulus, tensile strength, energy, and elongation at yield were measured. It was found that the mechanical properties of the composite were higher than those of PE by a factor…

Theoretical study of small silicon clusters: Cyclic ground state structure of Si3

Krishnan Raghavachari1985-10-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The ground state structure of Si3 is found to be cyclic (1A1, C2v symmetry) with an apex bond angle of ≂80°. The linear form, analogous to the known structure of C3, is found to be a saddle point which transforms without activation to the cyclic structure. There is a low-lying triplet state (3A′2, D3h symmetry) which…
