The constrained blister test for the energy of interfacial adhesion

M. J. Napolitano、A. Chudnovsky、A. Moet1988-01-01Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology

The constrained blister test (CBT) was designed to measure the energy of interfacial adhesion ( y) of polymeric films and coatings. Theoretical analysis of the CBT established a relationship between blister growth and interfacial parameters of the form A(t) A(t0)=exp[βp2h ph-γ (t- t0)] where A(t) is the blister area a…

COMBINED BUOYANCY, SURFACE TENSION FLOW IN LIQUID METALS

T. L. Bergman、John R. Keller1988-01-01Numerical Heat Transfer

The characteristics of combined buoyancy and thermocapillary flow for liquid metals in a rectangular cavity have been studied numerically. Results show that, for augmenting buoyancy and surface tension forces, qualitative flow patterns and isotherms are unchanged, but enhanced fluid velocities and heat transfer rates…

Fitting Woven Fabric to Surfaces in Three Dimensions

Francesann L. Heisey、K. D. Haller1988-01-01Journal of the Textile Institute

A computational method is presented for fitting woven fabric to nonalgebraic surfaces by using numerical-analysis techniques. The method is based upon modelling the process of smoothing fabric over a surface. Fabric co–ordinates are mapped onto the surface to be fitted. No assumptions are made about the surface to be…

Biological Reduction of Structural Iron in Sodium‐Nontronite

Jun Wu、Charles B. Roth、Philip F. Low1988-01-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract To test the possibility that the structural Fe 3+ in clay minerals can be biologically reduced, nontronite was mixed with sucrose and an aqueous extract from a Chinese paddy soil and incubated for 14 d at room temperature. Reflectance spectra, x‐ray diffraction patterns and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratios were determined…

The Locations of Collagens with Different Thermal Stabilities in Fibrils of Bovine Reticular Dermis

Paul L. Kronick、Beverly E. Maleeff、Robert J. Carroll1988-01-01Connective Tissue Research

The techniques of differential scanning calorimetry and electron microscopy were combined to locate collagens with different thermal stabilities in bovine dermis. When calfskin was heated at 1.25 degrees C/min, denatured cores developed in the fibrils at 65 degrees C, leaving native-banded sheaths. Coincident with the…

High-pressure studies on Ge-Te glasses. Evidence for a critical composition in IV-VI chalcogenide glassy systems

S. Asokan、G. Parthasarathy、E. S. R. Gopal1988-01-01Philosophical Magazine B

The electrical resistivity of bulk GexTe100-x glasses has been measured as a function of temperature and pressure. Under high pressure, all the glasses were found to undergo sharp discontinuous transitions from glassy semiconductors to crystalline metal. Several of the observed properties such as the transition pressu…

Isotope effect of vacancy diffusion in b.c.c. α-Fe

Maurizio Marchese、Gianni Jacucci、C. P. Flynn1988-01-01Philosophical Magazine Letters

By means of detailed calculations with the Finnis-Sinclair potential and short-memory augmented rate theory we have investigated the isotope effect for vacancy diffusion in b.c.c. α-Fe. The experimental value is consistent with a model in which a double barrier bars the diffusion path.

Molecular structure and reentrant phases in polar liquid crystals

Joseph O. Indekeu、A. Nihat Berker1988-01-01Journal de physique

The spin-gas model of liquid crystals is employed to describe and explain single, double and quadruple reentrances of nematic and smectic phases, as well as reentrances below the monolayer smectic A1 phase, all of which are observed experimentally. New sextuple (and octuple) reentrances are predicted in the sequence n…
