Defects and textures were studied in the discotic mesophases formed by an hexa-alkoxy-triphenylene (the pentyl derivative). Two main textures are distinguished, with molecular stacks lying mainly vertical or horizontal. The vertical texture is more frequent between slide and coverslip; the second one is favoured by th…

Electron microscope studies have been made of the propagation of shear cracks and the distribution of dislocations in the plastic zone during in situ tensile deformation of stainless steel single crystals. In thin-foil specimens under plane stress conditions, the plastic zone was coplanar with the crack and it represe…

We present a review of the physical properties of ferroelectric liquid crystals in the chiral smectic C* phase. We describe the measurements of spontaneous polarization and related quantities. We discuss the effects of small and large electric fields on homogeneous textures.

The hydrogen embrittlement of an AISI 304 steel containing different amounts of α′ martensite has been studied by charging the specimens with hydrogen through cathodic polarization and subsequent tensile testing. Increasing α′ martensite content was found to have a great effect on the fracture surface morphology and t…

During the period 1950–1979 the author has, in co-operation with various co-workers, investigated some of the corrosion phenomena occurring in the application of copper materials. A survey is given of some conclusions reached in investigations on the following subjects: the electrode kinetics of copper in acidic coppe…

Abstract The formation of volatile pyrolyzates in poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied by pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy. Isotopic distributions of pyrolyzates from experiments with perdeutero‐PVC show that pure conjugated aromatic pyrolyzates (e.g., benzene, styrene, naphalene, biphenyl, anthracene)…

A diatomic linear chain with non-linear polarizability in one sublattice is studied as a simplified version of a recent microscopic model for ferroelectric soft modes. The dispersion curves are described in a self-consistent approximation for all temperatures of the paraelectric regime. In three dimensions and for T≥T…

Buildup factors for photons in infinite homogeneous samples of air, water, and iron have been calculated by a moments method code. The photons were assumed to be emitted from a point source. Comparisons of these results to values obtained earlier, both by experiment and by calculation, show reasonable agreement except…

Infrared spectra of the water formaldehyde complex in argon and nitrogen matrices have been obtained. The complex shifts of the water fundamentals clearly show that water forms a hydrogen bond with formaldehyde. HDO prefers to form a D bond, but a metastable H-bonded complex is observed in nitrogen matrices below 20 K.

Freely suspended films of the material DOBAMBC ($p$-decyloxybenzylidene-${p}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate), which has a layered ferroelectric liquid-crystalline phase (the chiral smectic $C$ phase), are created across a rectangular hole in a glass microscope cover slide. The first paper on librational modes (LMs) of water in hydrated solids appeared in 1956 [l], although some earlier papers mentioned them in the context of other studies [2–4]. The physical fact that diamond is electrically insulating while amorphous carbon and graphite are conducting is used in the present work to study the local damage that each implanted ion creates around its track and to conclude about the processes through which implanted diamond turns amorphous. Photocurrent spectroscopy has been used to examine the early stages of anodic film growth on titanium. Analysis of the photocurrent conversion efficiency as a function of wavelength for films formed at different potentials has shown that the film is essentially pure TiO2 above ca.1.5 V vs. SCE (at pH 0).
