Analysis of the size of sandstone particles from the Cathedrals of Salamanca. Independence between granulometry and deterioration
11 sandstone samples from the cathedrals of Salamanca were analysed granulometrically. The study was to establish whether there is a direct connection between the particle size of such stone and the surface deterioration of some of the ashlars in the facades. This was carried out with the help of diffraction spectrome…

Influencia del filler calizo en las propiedades de los morteros a resistencia constante
This article studies the effects produced by the lime filler on the Portugal cement used with additions in the production of mortars. The starting point is a Portland cement to which different ratios of lime filler, ranging from 0-50%, are added. The next step consists of preparing mortar specimens using standardized…
Granites employed in Ávila-Spain. I. Chemical composition of the different types
The chemical composition of the different types of granite employed in the Cathedral and buildings of historic and artistic interest in Avila (Spain) is studied. The differences among the various fades studied (grey, ochre and bloodstone granites) are explained in terms of their different mineralogical composition, a…

Redox Cyclability of a Self‐Doped Polyaniline
Poly(4‐anilino‐1‐butanesulfonic acid) sodium salt was synthesized from the electrochemical oxidation of 4‐anilino‐1‐butanesulfonic acid sodium salt, which was readily obtained from aniline and 1,4‐butane sultone. The resulting water‐soluble polymer has shown much higher redox cyclability than unsubstituted polyaniline…

Formation and Thermochromism of V O2Films Deposited by RF Magnetron Sputtering at Low Substrate Temperature
Thermochromic VO 2 films were deposited on substrates of silicon and Pyrex glass by reactive rf magnetron sputtering and characterized by thin-film X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and spectrophotometry. Films with a VO 2 single phase were formed abov…
Rheological consequences of microstructural transitions in colloidal crystals
The flow properties of a suspension of 146 nm diameter charge, stabilized particles at a volume fraction of 0.33 are detailed, and links are made with small-angle neutron scattering structure determinations. At rest the suspension is ordered, having hexagonally close-packed planes lying parallel to the rheometer wall…
Altered layer as sensitive initial chemical state indicator*
XPS techniques are used for a comparative study of ion induced effects in simple oxides (ZrO2, SiO2, TiO2) and complex oxides (ZrSiO4, CaTiSiO5, La2TiO5, PbTiO3). We have found that reduction effects in simple and complex oxides differ. The interpretation of altered layer composition has been qualitatively considered…
Quiescent polymer crystallization: Modelling and measurements
Abstract The problem of predicting nonisothermal crystallization kinetics based on isothermal data is considered, with reference to the difficulties involved, both experimental and theoretical. The kinetic model used is the differential form of the Nakamura equation which is an extension of the Avrami equation so as t…

A review of polyethylene–polypropylene blends and their compatibilization
Abstract A major stream of post‐consumer plastics is a commingled blend of polyethylenes and polypropylenes, which usually exhibits lower performance compared with that of the homopolymers due to the incompatible nature of polyethylenes and polypropylenes. Various studies have been carried out to characterize the stru…
Pitting Corrosion of Titanium
The breakdown of native and anodically grown oxide films on Ti electrodes is investigated by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), video microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and voltammetry. SECM is used to demonstrate that the oxidation of Br − on Ti occurs at microscopic surface sites (10 to 50 μm dia…
Oxidation Kinetics of Chemically Vapor‐Deposited Silicon Carbide in Wet Oxygen
The oxidation kinetics of chemically vapor‐deposited SiC in dry oxygen and wet oxygen ( P H2O = 0.1 atm) at temperatures between 1200° and 1400°C were monitored using thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that in a clean environment, 10% water vapor enhanced the oxidation kinetics of SiC only very slightly compared…
