State of Dispersion – Mechanical Properties Correlation in Small Particle Filled Polymer Composites

Yoshiyuki Suetsugu1990-09-01International Polymer Processing

Abstract Correlation between state of dispersion and mechanical properties is obtained and failure mechanisms from falling weight impact tests are discussed. The state of dispersion is characterized for calcium carbonate filled polypropylene model composites by using a scanning electron microscope. A dispersion index…

Introduction to compatibilization of polymer blends

R.L. Markham1990-09-01Advances in Polymer Technology

Abstract The key to preparation of commercially useful blends based on immiscible polymer pairs is compatibilization. Advances over the past ten years have considerably enhanced the understanding of this phenomenon. The selection of an appropriate compatibilizer and the processing technique to enhance the compatibiliz…

Physical and Acoustical Properties of Perfluorooctylbromide, An Ultrasound Contrast Agent

Michael P. André、Thomas M. Nelson、R. F. Mattrey1990-09-01Investigative Radiology

Perfluorooctylbromide (PFOB: C8F17Br) has been shown to be an effective ultrasound contrast agent when incorporated in tissues. The authors have recently demonstrated that PFOB also enhances tissues and Doppler signals during its capillary phase. To help elucidate the physical basis of their observations, the authors…

Peroxide modified polyolefin blends: Part I. Effects on ldpe/pp blends with components of similar initial viscosities

D. W. Yu、M. Xanthos、Costas G. Gogos1990-09-01Advances in Polymer Technology

Abstract As part of a broader research effort to prepare polyolefin blends with controlled rheological and mechanical behavior, LDPE/PP blends were peroxide modified through reactive processing in intensive batch mixers. Polymers with similar initial viscosities and elasticities were first melt mixed and then simultan…

Stability of spherulite growth rate

Andrzej Pawlak、Andrzej Gałęski1990-09-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract Spherulite growth rates in thin films of isotactic polypropylene, poly (methylene oxide), and poly (ethylene adipate) have been studied by light microscopy. The growth rate of the parts of spherulites formed from pockets of occluded melt is decreased drastically. The decrease is associated with the negative p…

Microstructural and Chemical Influences of Silicate Grain‐Boundary Phases in Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia

Yung‐Jen Lin、P. Angelini、Martha L. Mecartney1990-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The microstructure and chemistry of grain‐boundary phases in silicate‐doped Y 2 O 3 ─ZrO 2 ceramics were evaluated by analytical electron microscopy. Two different silicate compositions were used: one an aluminosilicate and the other a borosilicate glass. These grain‐boundary phases had a significant impact on the gra…

The use of Isocyanate as a Bonding Agent to Improve the Mechanical Properties of Polyethylene-Wood Fiber Composites

Rishi Raj、B. V. Kokta、Claude Daneault1990-09-01International Journal of Polymeric Materials

Chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) of aspen was used as a filler in high density (HDPE) and linear low density (LLDPE) polyethylenes. To improve the bonding between the fiber and polymer, different chemical treatments of the fiber a) treatment with different isocyanates b) coating with maleic anhydride was carried out.…

Blue phase mixtures exhibiting low fractions of a chiral compound experimental observation of some unusual properties

G. Heppke、Heinz‐S. Kitzerow、D. Lötzsch 等 4 位作者1990-09-01Liquid Crystals

We have used chiral compounds with very high helical twisting power as components in induced-cholesteric mixtures in order to obtain new blue phase systems. In one of these mixtures an unusual large blue phase temperature range of more than 10 K was observed. The lattice constant of the BPI in this system increases st…

Mullite Whiskers from Precursor Gel Powders

M. G. M. U. Ismail、Hiroshi Arai、Zenjiro Nakai 等 4 位作者1990-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A mullite precursor sol was prepared by mixing boehmite and silica sols. On addition of 3.5 wt% F − ion as a 47% solution of HF, the mullite sol was gelled. The dried gel was ball‐milled and calcined at 1400°C for 1 h in an airtight container. Mullite whiskers grew on the (111) plane along the 〈001〉 direction.

Metabolic Stability of 3‐O‐Methyl‐d‐Glucose in Brain and Other Tissues

Thérèse M. Jay、Gerald A. Dienel、Nancy F. Cruz 等 6 位作者1990-09-01Journal of Neurochemistry

3-O-Methyl-D-glucose (methylglucose) is often used to study blood-brain barrier transport and the distribution spaces of hexoses in brain. A critical requirement of this application is that it not be chemically converted in the tissues. Recent reports of phosphorylation of methylglucose by yeast and heart hexokinase h…

Constant-dispersion grism spectrometer for channeled spectra

Wesley A. Traub1990-09-01Journal of the Optical Society of America A

A new spectrometer design is presented in which the angular dispersion with respect to wave number is nearly constant. The spectrometer is a type of grism, a series combination of grating and prism, in which the constant parts of the dispersion terms add to one another but the slopes of the dispersions tend to cancel…
