ÜBER DIE TIERGEOGRAPHISCHEN VERHÄLTNISSE DER CIRCUMANTARKTISCHEN SÜSSWASSERFAUNA

V. Brehm1936-10-01Biological reviews/Biological reviews of the Cambridge Philosophical Society

Summary This review gives a survey of endemic organisms of the fresh‐water fauna of the circumpolar regions, which have geologically, but not ecologically, separate habitats. A number of examples has been selected which indicate that various animals occur in approximately the same geographical distribution areas as Ir…

The Diffraction Grating at Grazing Incidence

Luis W. Alvarez1936-09-01Journal of the Optical Society of America

An experimental test of the grating law has been made by using a coarse, plane grating at grazing incidence, in a spectrograph similar to that used in the x-ray case. No deviations from the grating law were found which were as large as the experimental error of 0.02 percent.

The Crystal Structure of Germanium Disulphide

W. H. Zachariasen1936-09-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

Crystals of GeS2 are orthorhombic. The unit cell contains 24 molecules and has dimensions: a=11.66A, b=22.34A, c=6.86A. Accuracy ½ percent. The space groups is Fdd (C2v19). Eight of the germanium atoms are situated on the twofold axes; all other atoms occupy general positions. The twelve parameters involved have been…

The Coefficient of Thermal Expansion of Magnesium Oxide

Milo A. Durand1936-08-01Physics

The thermal expansion of single crystal magnesium oxide has been measured from 85°K to 480°K. The results are combined with those of Austin, so that data are available from 85°K to 1273°K. The observed thermal expansion of this substance is in excellent accord with the relation, due to Grüneisen, between thermal expan…

The Ferromagnetism of Nickel. II. Temperature Effects

J. C. Slater1936-06-15OpenAlex

With the model proposed in an earlier paper, the temperature variation of the ferromagnetism of nickel is discussed. By application of Fermi statistics to the electrons in the $d$ bands, the free energy is computed as a function of temperature and magnetic moment. At each temperature, the value of magnetic moment for…

Variation of Resistance and Structure of Cobalt with Temperature and a Discussion of Its Photoelectric Emission

Louis Marick1936-06-01Physical Review

X-ray (Hull-Debye-Scherrer) diffraction patterns were obtained for cobalt in a camera designed for high temperature work. No crystallographic change for this metal has been observed in the region about 850\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C at which the change in the photoelectric emission has been reported. The $\en…
