Colloidal Redox Catalysts for Evolution of Oxygen and for Light‐Induced Evolution of Hydrogen from Water

J. Kiwi、Michaël Grätzel1979-08-01Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English

Chemical utilization of the sun's radiation is very attractive aim. The evolution of oxygen and, on irradiation, hydrogen from water in the presence of redox catalysts are known, but rather slow processes. Colloidal ruthenium and other metals catalyze these reactions better than less finely divided materials.

Energy Dynamics of SPT

John H. Schmertmann、Alejandro Palacios1979-08-01Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division

The writers report on the dynamics of the standard penetration test (SPT) as determined from a study involving hammer impact and wave mechanics theory, field measurements of dynamic behavior during SPT, and computer simulations using the wave equation as developed for computer studies of pile driving. The field data m…

Polymorphic structures of poly(tetramethylene adipate)

Ram Minke、John Blackwell1979-08-01Journal of Macromolecular Science Part B

X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry studies show that the linear polyester poly (tetramethylene adipate) (PTMA) can exist in two polymorphic forms in the solid state, which are designated α- and β-PTMA. The α form is obtained by annealing a stretched film at 52°C for several days. The unit cell is…

Influence of Electric Charge and Humidity Upon the Diffusion Coefficient of Radon Decay Products

J. Porstendörfer、T.T. Mercer1979-08-01Health Physics

The diffusivity of freshly formed thoron decay products was studied under a variety of conditions with respect to relative humidity and electric charge and over a range of thoron concentrations from 340 nCi/l to 3.4 × I05 nCi/l. 85–88% of ThB(212Pb) atoms carried a positive charge when formed. In moist air (30% < rela…

Absolute pressure measurements and analysis of diamonds subjected to maximum static pressures of 1.3–1.7 Mbar

Ho‐kwang Mao、P. M. Bell、K. J. Dunn 等 5 位作者1979-08-01Review of Scientific Instruments

Force per unit area measurements made in the megabar pressure cell, independently of other pressure calibration systems, are consistent with the ruby R1 scale of Mao, Bell, Shaner, and Steinberg and its extrapolation to 1.4 Mbar. Physical analysis of diamond anvils removed after experiments to maximum pressures of 1.3…

Microstructure of cold-rolled copper

A.S. Malin、M. Hatherly1979-08-01Metal Science

Optical and electron metallography have been used to examine the substructures developed in OFHC copper after rolling reductions from 50–97%. These structures are related to the displacements observed at free surfaces after deformation. It is shown that deformation occurs in a series of overlapping stages in each of w…

Accurate X-ray determination of the lattice parameters and the thermal expansion coefficients of VO2near the transition temperature

D. Kucharczyk、T. Niklewski1979-08-01Journal of Applied Crystallography

Accurate lattice parameters and thermal expansion coefficients of the low- and high-temperature phases of VO2 have been determined from measurements on single crystals with the Bond method [Acta Cryst. (1960), 13, 814–818]. The transition from a semi-conducting to a metallic phase occurs over a temperature range of 0.…

Adiabatic Plastic Deformation

Harry C. Rogers1979-08-01OpenAlex

Adiabatic plastic may play a role in such widely diverse areas as ballistic impact, explosive fragmentation, cryogenic behavior of materials, high velocity shaping and forming, machining, grinding 0), surface frictional effects, erosion (2), and seismic faulting. All of the shearing phenomena are based on two facts: A…

Liquid-glass transition, a free-volume approach

Morrel H. Cohen、Gary S. Grest1979-08-01OpenAlex

The free-volume model, which has been useful for describing the behavior of the viscosity $\ensuremath{\eta}$ of dense liquids and glasses, is extended to account for their thermodynamic behavior as well. Experimental results for the heat capacity ${C}_{p}$ and the volume $\overline{v}$ show that the system falls out…

Nonlinear electrooptic effects in KDP and DKDP crystals

W. Jamroz、J. Karniewicz、J. Stachowiak1979-07-31Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics

An investigation is made of the relationship between the coefficients of the electrooptic effects and the tensors of the nonlinear electric susceptibilities. The form of the tensor K, which describes the fourth-order nonlinear electrooptic effect, is found for crystals having 42m symmetry. The results are given of pol…

Enhancement of Hydrogen Uptake Rates for Nb and Ta by Thin Surface Overlayers

M.A. Pick、J. W. Davenport、Myron Strongin 等 4 位作者1979-07-23Physical Review Letters

It is shown that thin layers of Pd or Pt enhance the uptake rate of hydrogen into bulk Nb with almost every hydrogen atom that hits the surface passing into the bulk. A model for the kinetics is formulated showing that in a composite-system large uptake rates are achieved by combining the surface properties of Pd with…
