The heats of formation of TiCl4(l), TiCl3(s), and TiCl2(s) were determined by chlorinating Ti, TiCl3(s), and TiCl2(s), respectively, in a nickel-bomb calorimeter to give TiCl4(l). The directly measured heat of chlorination at 25° of Ti is —190.0±0.4, of TiCl3(s) is 20.9±0.1, and of TiCl2(s) is 69.9±0.8 kcal/mole—1. Re…
Abstract Three viscosity correlations were tested for liquids at their boiling points. Compounds studied included normal paraffins, branched‐chain hydrocarbons, aromatics, halogenated methanes and ethanes, water, and aliphatic alcohols. The correlations were tested for the most part with viscosity and thermodynamic da…
A simplified nomograph has been designed to permit rapid solution of Peirce's geo metric relationships for plain weaves. To illustrate use of the nomograph, several practical problems in cloth structure are presented and worked out in some detail. Advantages and limitations of the nomograph are discussed.
The complex dielectric constant for wool-water systems has been determined at a frequency of 26 000 Mc by a cavity resonator method similar to the method employed at 3000 and 9300 Mc. At 26 000 Mc, measurements on single wool fibers and at relative humidities as high as 98% have proved feasible. The complex dielectric…

Die Messungen hatten folgendes Ergebnis: MgS : a = 5,1929 ± 0,0003 kX CaS : a =…
Abstract Unusual orientation effects encountered during the formation of filaments of polyamides (nylon 6,6, 6,10, and 6 (polyhexamethylene adipamide, sebacamide, and polycaproamide)), polythene, and Terylene (polyethylene terephthalate) are described and discussed. The paper is divided into two parts: (I) extrusion,…
The stability relations between the hexagonal and rhombohedral graphite modification have been investigated using predominantly “single crystals”. Neglecting small amounts of stacking disorder natural graphite crystals have been found to consist usually of the pure hexagonal modification. However, several examples wer…
Barium ferrite (BaO:6Fe2O3) has been investigated magnetically to test the predictions of fine particle theory in the region of grain sizes larger than the critical one for which no satisfactory theory exists as yet. Grain size and coercive force of polycrystalline magnets (nonoriented and crystal oriented) were close…
The ordered arrangements of the defects of iron atoms in FeSe x have been studied for several compositions by X-ray analysis. These defects tend to assume an ordered arrangement as in the case of pyrrhotite FeS 1.14 . New phases are found in the region ( x =8/7∼4/3) which have been considered as the single phase regio…

A combination of Knudsen effusion and mass spectrometric techniques have been employed in studying the species existing in the vapor in thermodynamic equilibrium with a condensed mixture of boron and boric oxide in the temperature range 1300°K to 1500°K. Positive ions were produced by electron bombardment of vapor eff…

Abstract The internal structure of various types of filter media and the nature of fluid flow through them are examined. Methods of characterizing the internal pore structure of filter media are reviewed, and the permeability, bubble‐pressure, and mercury‐intrusion methods are applied to ten typical media, with result…
A survey of the corrosion chemical behavior of unalloyed Ti is given. The protective coating arising in various media was detected by electron diffraction diagrams, and the mechanism of the formation and dissolution of the protective layer is discussed. The voltage-time pattern of activated titanium in aqueous solutio…

The possible configurations adopted by woven cloth when fitted to various surfaces are discussed in this paper. A general type of fitting (involving two parameters) to surfaces of revolution is given together with some photographic illustrations. The differential equations of fitting to any surface are derived and it…
