Anomalous Optical Freedericksz Transition in an Absorbing Liquid Crystal

I. Jánossy、Ashley Lloyd、B. S. Wherrett1990-02-01Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Incorporating Nonlinear Optics

Laser-induced reorientation was studied in absorbing nematic films. The optical Freedericksz threshold occured at an intensity level of 50 W/cm2 in contrast to the normally observed few KW/cm2 value for transparent layers. Thermomechanical coupling is considered as a possible explanation of the observed anomaly.

Determining the Nucleation Rate Curve for Lithium Disilicate Glass by Differential Thermal Analysis

Chandra S. Ray、Delbert E. Day1990-02-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The crystallization of lithium disilicate (Li 2 O·2SiO 2 ) glass nucleated at various temperatures was studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA). A plot of the DTA crystallization peak height versus nucleation temperature closely resembles the classical nucleation rate curve for lithium disilicate glass whose max…

Analytical Transmission Electron Microscope Studies of Plagioclase, Muscovite, and K-Feldspar Weathering

Jillian F. Banfield、Richard A. Eggleton1990-02-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract Analytical and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of weathered plagioclase and K-feldspar provided microtextural and chemical data that suggest a sequential formation of weathering products. An alteration layer < 1 µ m thick on feldspar surfaces had short-range order and was termed protocryst…

R. Jakubas、L. Sobczyk1990-02-01Phase Transitions

A review of the results of studies on the structure, phase transitions and physical properties of alkylammonium halogenoantimonates (III) and bismuthates (III) is presented. The crystals of these compounds are characterized by a variety of anionic structures and show a number of phase transitions including those to po…

Electrochemistry of Conductive Polymers VIII: In Situ Spectroelectrochemical Studies of Polyaniline Growth Mechanisms

Yoon‐Bo Shim、Mi‐Sook Won、Su‐Moon Park1990-02-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The earlier stage of the polymerization reaction of polyaniline has been studied employing in situ spectroelectrochemical techniques. The results indicate that the nitrene cation appears to be a key intermediate species, which leads to all three possible dimers including a head‐to‐tail dimer (N‐phenyl‐p‐phenylenediami…

Protein N-myristoylation in Escherichia coli: reconstitution of a eukaryotic protein modification in bacteria.

Robert J. Duronio、Emily Jackson-Machelski、Robert O. Heuckeroth 等 9 位作者1990-02-01Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Protein N-myristoylation refers to the covalent attachment of a myristoyl group (C14:0), via amide linkage, to the NH2-terminal glycine residue of certain cellular and viral proteins. Myristoyl-CoA:protein N-myristoyltransferase (NMT) catalyzes this cotranslational modification. We have developed a system for studying…

Starburst‐Dendrimere: Kontrolle von Größe, Gestalt, Oberflächenchemie, Topologie und Flexibilität beim Übergang von Atomen zu makroskopischer Materie

Donald A. Tomalia、Adel M. Naylor、William A. Goddard1990-02-01Angewandte Chemie

Nonequilibrium entropy and entropy distributions

Stephen A. Langer、James P. Sethna、Eric R. Grannan1990-02-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Glasses have nonzero zero-temperature entropies. Because they are out of equilibrium, the ``thermodynamic'' entropy, determined by heat flow, is not equal to the ``statistical'' entropy, which measures volumes in phase space. We discuss the relationship between the two kinds of entropy in nonequilibrium systems and sh…

Breakup of concentric double emulsion droplets in linear flows

Howard A. Stone、L. Gary Leal1990-02-01Journal of Fluid Mechanics

The behaviour of concentric double emulsion droplets in linear flows is examined analytically, for the case when both fluid–fluid interfaces remain nearly spherical, and numerically, for the effect of finite interface deformation. The theoretical analysis is used to calculate the velocity fields interior and exterior…

C.J. van Oss、Robert J. Good、R.J. Busscher1990-02-01Journal of Dispersion Science and Technology

By measuring contact angles with water, glycerol and formamide on a number of polar surfaces, an estimate could be made of the electron-acceptor (γ+ ) and the electron-donor (γ− ) parameters of glycerol (G) and formamide (F), relative to the parameters of. water (W), for which a reference value of γ+ W = γ− W = 25.5 m…

Donald L. Smith、Andrew S. Alimonda、Chau‐Chen Chen 等 5 位作者1990-02-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

The plasma‐enhanced chemical vapor deposition process for SiN x H y films has been in use for over two decades, but the chemistry of the process has yet to be explained. In the present work, the composition of a 13 MHz NH 3 ‐ SiH 4 parallel plate glow discharge plasma was analyzed by line‐of‐sight sampling from the fi…
