Mesoporous silica was synthesized in the presence of metal (Au, Pt, and Ag) nanoparticles in the 2−20 nm range. Sample characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The metal nanoparticles in the 2−10 nm range were successfully incorporated into the ordered mesoporous SBA-15 structures;…

A detailed theoretical study is presented for the influence of linearly polarised intense terahertz (THz) laser radiation on energy states of hydrogen-like impurities in semiconductors. The dependence of the binding energy for 1s and 2p states on intensity and frequency of the THz radiation has been examined.

Elementary electronic excitation is studied theoretically for a 2DEG in the presence of spin orbit (SO) interaction induced by Rashba effect. In such a system, coupled plasmon-phonon excitation can be achieved via intra- and inter-SO electronic transitions. As a result, six branches of the coupled plasmon-phonon oscil…

The local structure of Ba6Ge25 has been studied by x-ray diffraction and the atomic pair distribution function technique at 40 K and room temperature. Unambiguous evidence has been found that two out of three types of Ba atoms in Ba6Ge25 move off their positions and become locked in split sites at low temperatures.

We model the influence of scattering along the channel and extension regions of dual gate nanotransistor. It is found that the reduction in drain current due to scattering in the right half of the channel is comparable to the reduction in drain current due to scattering in the left half of the channel, when the channe…

A novel class of surface-active copolymers is described, designed to protect surfaces from nonspecific protein adsorption while still inducing specific cell attachment and spreading. A graft copolymer was synthesized, containing poly-(L-lysine) (PLL) as the backbone and substrate binding and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG…

Fully (99+ %) hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was electrospun from water using Triton X-100 surfactant to lower the surface tension. The diameter of the electrospun PVA fibers ranged from 100 to 700 nm. Treatment of the PVA fiber mats with methanol for 8 h stabilized the fibers against disintegration in contact w…

Abstract Interpenetrating networks of organic and inorganic semiconductors are attractive for photovoltaic cells because electron transfer between the two semiconductors splits excitons. In this paper we show that films of titania with a uniform distribution of pore sizes can be made using a block copolymer as a struc…

A major target in diamond deposition is the growth of heteroepitaxial diamond films that are free from impurities, grain boundaries and defects for use in electronic applications. Nickel has been identified as a material with a close lattice match to diamond that minimises defect formation in diamond films but as a su…
