Evolution of a sandpile in a thick flow regime

S. N. Dorogovtsev、J. F. F. Mendes1999-09-16arXiv

We solve a one-dimensional sandpile problem analytically in a thick flow regime when the pile evolution may be described by a set of linear equations. We demonstrate that, if an income flow is constant, a space periodicity takes place while the sandpile evolves even for a pile of only one type of particles. Hence, gra…

The polymorphic modifications \ensuremath{\alpha}, \ensuremath{\beta}, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{WO}}_{6}$ of the iron (III) tungstate have been investigated by resistivity and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. The high-electrical resistivity for all phases complies with the d…

Frequency and temperature dependence of conductivity for perovskite titanates

T. Katsufuji、Y. Tokura1999-09-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Frequency- and temperature-dependent conductivity has been studied by optical spectroscopy for perovskite titanates, which are typical three-dimensional correlated metals. Extended Drude analysis of the data indicates that only one parameter, the ${T}^{2}$ coefficient of the scattering rate, dominates the temperature…

Crystal model for energy-transfer processes in organized media: Higher-order electric multipolar interactions

S. Vásquez1999-09-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The study of the energy-transfer processes is extended, within the conceptual framework of the crystal model, to the electric dipole-electric quadrupole and electric quadrupole-electric quadrupole interactions. The formalisms for the energy-transfer rates are deduced, applying a mixed scheme of Cartesian tensors which…

The objective of this study was to examine the reactivity of superoxide ion as an oxygen nucleophile towards biodegradable biomaterials having an aliphatic polyester structure, such as poly(D,L-Lactide) (PDLLA). The changes in molecular weights and thermal properties of PDLLA were studied as a function of the superoxi…

M. Sing、R. Neudert、H. von Lips 等 14 位作者1999-09-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We present high-energy spectroscopy results on the occupied and unoccupied electronic structures of the strongly anisotropic compounds ${\mathrm{MoO}}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{K}}_{0.3}{\mathrm{MoO}}_{3}$ near the Fermi level. X-ray photoemission reveals a close similarity of the valence-band spectra in both materials. The…

Structure and composition of the ZnSe(001) surface during atomic-layer epitaxy

Akihiro Ohtake、Takashi Hanada、Tetsuji Yasuda 等 5 位作者1999-09-15Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Atomic-layer epitaxy (ALE) processes of ZnSe on GaAs(001) have been studied using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), total reflection-angle x-ray spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We have obtained direct evidence that the growing surface of ZnSe(001) changes its chemical composition…

Multilayer thermoelectric refrigeration in Hg1−xCdxTe superlattices

R. J. Radtke、Hannelore Ehrenreich、C. H. Grein1999-09-15Journal of Applied Physics

The thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of Hg1−xCdxTe superlattices (SLs) having currents along the growth axis is computed using a realistic SL band structure and the multisubband Boltzmann equation. For a narrow well and wide barrier, a heavy C1 and higher-lying light C2 subband combine to form a (nonoptimal) carrier-…

Analysis of neutron diffraction spectra acquired in situ during stress-induced transformations in superelastic NiTi

R. Vaidyanathan、M.A.M. Bourke、David C. Dunand1999-09-15Journal of Applied Physics

Neutron diffraction spectra were obtained during various stages of a reversible stress-induced austenite to martensite phase transformation in superelastic NiTi. This was accomplished by neutron diffraction measurements on bulk polycrystalline NiTi samples simultaneously subjected to mechanical loading. Analysis of th…

The chemical structure and bonding of the hypermetallic Al5C and Al5C− species have been studied by photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Both Al5C (C2v, 2A1) and Al5C− (C2v, 1A1) are found to have planar structures that can be related to that of the planar square Al4C− by adding one Al+ ion or one Al…

The coenzyme B(12)-dependent isobutyryl coenzyme A (CoA) mutase (ICM) and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MCM) catalyze the isomerization of n-butyryl-CoA to isobutyryl-CoA and of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, respectively. The influence that both mutases have on the conversion of n- and isobutyryl-CoA to methylmalonyl…
