Super-slippery Carbon Nanotubes: Symmetry Breaking breaks friction

M. Damnjanovic、T. Vukovic、I. Milosevic2001-05-23arXiv

The friction between the walls of multi-wall carbon nanotubes is shown to be extremely low in general, with important details related to the specific choice of the walls. This is governed by a simple expression revealing that the phenomenon is a profound consequence of the specific symmetry breaking: super-slippery sl…

Review on Scale Dependent Characterization of the Microstructure of Porous Media

R. Hilfer2001-05-23arXiv

The paper discusses local porosity theory and its relation with other geometric characterization methods for porous media such as correlation functions and contact distributions. Special emphasis is placed on the charcterization of geometric observables through Hadwigers theorem in stochastic geometry. The four basic…

Two series of trends in negative pressure with cavitation in water were observed by the Berthelot method using single- and poly-crystalline molybdenum tubes sealed with single-crystalline copper plugs by repeating runs of temperature cycles at rates of 70-100 cycles/day between 50 and 98 °C, where a run means successi…

The determination of site occupancies using a new strategy in Rietveld refinements

M. Heuer2001-05-22Journal of Applied Crystallography

Using X-ray data, the determination of the cation distribution in crystals becomes problematic as a result of parameter correlations in the structure refinements. To circumvent the problem, a new refinement strategy (LOT analysis) was proposed by Kroll et al. [ Eur. J. Mineral. (1997), pp. 705–734] and successfully ap…

Collective Electronic Oscillators for Second-Order Polarizabilities of Push−Pull Carotenoids

Timothée Toury、Joseph Zyss、Vladimir Chernyak 等 4 位作者2001-05-22The Journal of Physical Chemistry A

The first off-resonance hyperpolarizabilities (β(0)) of bisubstituted carotenoids are computed and analyzed using a quasiparticle, collective electronic oscillators (CEO) representation. The few oscillators which dominate the response are identified by solving the time dependent Hartree−Fock equations for the reduced…

Hexagonal ErMnO3

Bas B. Van Aken、Auke Meetsma、T. T. M. Palstra2001-05-22Acta Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online

The crystal structure of hexagonal ErMnO3, erbium manganese trioxide, has been determined at room temperature. It is isomorphous with YMnO3. Although we observed inversion twinning, similar to YMnO3, the twin fractions do not have a 1:1 ratio, and the crystals are expected to show net ferroelectricity.

Abstract The heat capacity of poly[carbonyl(ethylene‐ co ‐propylene)] with 95 mol % C 2 H 4 CO (Carilon EP®) was measured with standard differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature‐modulated DSC (TMDSC). The integral functions of enthalpy, entropy, and free enthalpy were derived. With quasi‐isothermal TMD…

Dynamics in a supercooled molecular liquid: Theory and simulations

A. Rinaldi、Francesco Sciortino、P. Tartaglia2001-05-22Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

We report extensive simulations of liquid supercooled states for a simple three-site molecular model, introduced by Lewis and Wahnström [Phys. Rev. E 50, 3865 (1994)] to mimic the behavior of orthoterphenyl. The large system size and the long simulation length allow us to calculate very precisely (in a large q-vector…

Configurational entropy and diffusion in a hard disc fluid

Robin J. Speedy2001-05-22The Journal of Chemical Physics

The constraints can be applied at any density and they cause a thermodynamic glass transition where the compressibility, heat capacity, and entropy…

From temperature studies at ambient pressure, it was pointed out for several glass-forming liquids that the alpha-relaxation time (tau) can be related to the dc-ionic conductivity (sigma) through the phenomenological fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein (DSE) equation.
