Dehydroxylation of Porous Glass by Means of Chlorine

Water in reconstructed 96 % SiO 2 glass is effectively removed by exposing porous glass to chlorine at high temperatures prior to final firing in vacuum. The annealing point of the final glass is markedly increased by such treatment, which results in elimination of the OH band due to replacement of OH − by Cl − ions.
