Hydroxyl Deformation in Kaolins

Ray L. Frost1998-06-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract The hydroxyl deformation modes of kaolins have been studied by Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy. Kaolinites showed well-resolved bands at 959, 938 and 915 cm −1 and an additional band at 923 cm −1 . For dickites, well-resolved bands were observed at 955, 936.5, 915 and 903 cm −1 . Halloysites showed…

N. Paredes、A. Rodrguez-Galn、J. Puiggal1998-06-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

A series of aliphatic poly(ester amide)s derived from 1,6-hexanediol, glycine, and diacids with a variable number of methylenes (from 2 to 8) have been synthesized and characterized. Infrared spectroscopy shows that the studied polymers present a unique kind of hydrogen bond that is established between their amide gro…

Adsorption of Monovalent Organic Cations on Sepiolite: Experimental Results and Model Calculations

Giora Rytwo、Shlomo Nir、L. Margulies 等 7 位作者1998-06-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract Adsorption of neutral organic molecules and the monovalent organic cations methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) to sepiolite was determined experimentally and investigated by an adsorption model. The largest amounts of MB and CV adsorbed were about 4-fold of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of sepiol…

Determination of the Glass Properties of D-Mannitol Using Sorbitol as an Impurity

Lian Yu、Dinesh S. Mishra、Daniel R. Rigsbee1998-06-01Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Due to its strong tendency to crystallize, the glass properties of mannitol cannot be measured directly. However, because mannitol can exist in a fully or partially amorphous state in drug formulations, it is important to determine the glass properties of mannitol. We obtained the glass properties of mannitol by intro…

Immunolocalisation of the cytoskeleton to plasmodesmata of Chara corallina

Leila M. Blackman、Robyn L. Overall1998-06-01The Plant Journal

Summary The macromolecular structure of plasmodesmata in the giant celled freshwater alga, Chara corallina , was examined using antibodies against cytoskeletal elements. The large internodal cells of Chara are separated by a nodal complex of smaller cells which are interconnected by plasmodesmata. Putative plasmodesma…

Cavitation and acoustic emission around laser-heated microparticles

Charles P. Lin、Michael W. Kelly1998-06-01Applied Physics Letters

We studied transient cavitation bubble formation and acoustic emission around individual laser-heated microparticles using subnanosecond time-resolved microscopy. Microcavitation bubbles were observed as early as 0.5 ns after the particles were heated by a 30 ps laser pulse. The bubbles expanded to a few micrometers i…

Inhibition of the Self-assembly of Collagen I into Fibrils with Synthetic Peptides

Darwin J. Prockop、Andrzej Fertala1998-06-01Journal of Biological Chemistry

A series of experiments were carried out to test the hypothesis that the self-assembly of collagen I monomers into fibrils depends on the interactions of specific binding sites in different regions of the monomer. Six synthetic peptides were prepared with sequences found either in the collagen triple helix or in the N…

Direct observation of oscillatory-shear-induced order in colloidal suspensions

Mark Haw、Wilson C. K. Poon、P. N. Pusey1998-06-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

We use optical microscopy to directly study ordering in concentrated colloidal suspensions of model hard spheres subjected to oscillatory shear in a parallel plate geometry. At high strain amplitude the particles order quickly into hexagonal planes in the plane of shear, oriented so that a close-packed direction is pa…
