Abstract The effects of intermolecular and intramolecular triplet quenchers and sensitizers on the photochromism of nitrospiropyran have been examined in order to clarify the role of the triplet state (3A*) as well as that of the excited singlet state (1A*). The rates of photocoloration and fatigue were significantly…

The drastic increase in coercivity observed after adding Al in Fe-Nd-B-based magnet alloys seems to originate partially from the occurrence of new Al-stabilized phases in the grain boundary region and at the surface of the Fe/sub 14/Nd/sub 2/B grains. To describe these phases, they were synthesized and their propertie…

The phenomena and the propagation processes of DC and AC arcs on the surface of polluted insulators were observed and investigated by means of a high-speed camera. Time-resolved photographs indicate that there is an obvious distinction between DC and AC flashover processes. Based on the alternating character of an AC…

The authors measured FTO (fast transient overvoltages) at various points of a commercial 550 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) by operating energized disconnectors. Based on the results of these measurements, the possible levels of FTO at various points of the GIS and the probability of occurrence of large levels are…

Colloidal silver and gold particles have been prepared by reduction of aqueous metal salt solutions in inverse microemulsions. The sols are characterized by absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Ultrasound treatment during reduction results in a narrower size distribution of the colloidal particles, as evid…

In this paper we study the stability of steady state solutions to Doi’s kinetic equation for rigid rod-like polymers in an arbitrary flow field. It is found that for a certain range of concentration, the addition of flow to an isotropic phase can induce a transition to the nematic phase, if the flow rate exceeds a cer…

A time-of-flight neutron diffraction experiment was undertaken on a powder sample of orthorhombic ZrO2 synthesized at 600°C and 6GPa for 30min. The Rietveld analysis for the diffraction data shows that the space group of this phase is Pbca. The refined lattice parameters are a0=1.00861, b0=0.52615, and c0=0.50910nm.

Cystathionine gamma-synthase catalyzes a pyridoxal phosphate dependent synthesis of cystathionine from O-succinyl-L-homoserine (OSHS) and L-cysteine via a gamma-replacement reaction. In the absence of L-cysteine, OSHS undergoes an enzyme-catalyzed, gamma-elimination reaction to form succinate, alpha-ketobutyrate, and…

Abstract An apparatus has been developed for the measurement of thermal conductivity of polymer melts. Based on the transient “line source method,” it is ideally suited to these materials because measurements can be made quickly, before the onset of thermal degradation. Also, little or no sample preparation is require…

Tracer diffusion coefficient of 51Cr in α-iron has been determined by a serial radio-frequency sputter-microsectioning method in the temperature range 885 to 1174 K. In α-iron of the paramagnetic state from the Curie temperature to the α-γ transformation temperature the diffusion coefficient of chromium shows a linear…

The ac impedance of poly-[1-methyl-3-(pyrrol-1-ylmethyl)pyridinium]+(poly-MPMP+) as a function of potential has been investigated in acetonitrile solutions. When the polymer is reduced it acts merely as a barrier to the migration of ions to the double layer of the underlying electrode. Thus the ionic conductivity of t…
