We demonstrate the epitaxial growth of hexagonal Pr2O3(001) on Si(111), with x-ray ω-scan full width at half maximum values as low as 0.06°, which is comparable with Si substrates. We find that a phase transition takes place during the anneal of the as-grown films in N2 below the growth temperature. The annealed films…

Ferroelectric materials with Bi-layered structure such as SrBi2Ta2O9 and SrBi2Nb2O9 are now intensively investigated in view of their applications in nonvolatile computer memories and high-temperature piezoelectric transducers. When Sr2+ is substituted with Ba2+, a significant disorder is induced and the material exhi…

La(Fe x Si 1−x ) 13 compounds exhibit an itinerant-electron metamagnetic (IEM) transition above Curie temperature TC. The IEM transition in the compound with x=0.88 is accompanied by a giant volume change. From a practical viewpoint, TC was controlled by hydrogen absorption in order to obtain such a giant volume magne…

Recent theories of spin-current-induced magnetization reversal are formulated in terms of a spin-mixing conductance $G^{mix}$. We evaluate $G^{mix}$ from first-principles for a number of (dis)ordered interfaces between magnetic and non-magnetic materials. In multi-terminal devices, the magnetization direction of a one…

We study the meandering instability during growth of an isolated nanostructure, a crystalline cone, consisting of concentric circular steps. The onset of the instability is studied analytically within the framework of the standard Burton-Cabrera-Frank model, which is applied to describe step flow growth in circular ge…

It has been long suspected that spin fluctuations in the weak itinerant ferromagnet ZrZn2 may lead to a triplet superconductivity in this material. Here we point out another possibility, a spatially inhomogeneous singlet superconducting state (a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state). We report detailed electronic st…

Thin films of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties have been synthesized by the pulsed-laser deposition technique on (100)-(SrTiO3). The lattice parameters of these manganites and correlatively their CMR properties can be controlled by the substrate temperature TS. The maximum CMR…

We describe the experimental observation of a crystal structure formed by glycerol droplets suspended in a nematic liquid crystal. The structure exhibits a high density hexagonal ordering. We have experimentally observed a noticeable interaction between droplets with tangential boundary conditions. Within the scope of…

New dissymmetric tertiary amines (N(3)SR) with varying N/S donor sets have been synthesized to provide mono- and dinuclear complexes. Acetate ions are used to complete the octahedral coordination sphere around nickel(II) atom(s). The facile conversion of mononuclear to dinuclear systems can be controlled to produce ei…

A method to prepare a new class of dianhydrides is outlined. A representative polyimide, PPI, has been prepared by a two-stage condensation reaction between polyphenylated dianhydride and 3,6-diamino-9-hexylcarbazole. The PPI is readily soluble in common organic solvents, and shows only 10 wt % loss at 555 °C.
