The strength and fracture of fully dense polycrystalline magnesium oxide

A.G. Evans、R. W. Davidge1969-08-01Philosophical magazine

The fracture of fully dense, polycrystalline MgO with grain sizes 10 to 500μm, has been studied. Specimens had chemically polished, machined or annealed surfaces. Fracture in chemically polished specimens is initiated by plastic flow, whilst that in machined specimens occurs by the extension of the flaws produced by m…

Metallic Mesh Bandpass Filters and Fabry-Perot Interferometer for the Far Infrared

Kiyomi Sakai、Takashi Fukui、Yoshiaki Tsunawaki 等 4 位作者1969-08-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

This paper describes optical properties of thin electroformed metallic meshes in detail. Since the transmittance shows the bandpass character around the wavelength near the grid constant, metal mesh can be used as a bandpass filter. The reflectance is high in the wavelength region longer than three times the grid cons…

Infrared Spectra and Structure of Polyurethane Elastomers from Polytetrahydrofuran, Diphenylmethane-4, 4′-diisocyanate, and Ethylenediamine

Koyuru Nakayama、T. Ino、Ikuo Matsubara1969-08-01Journal of Macromolecular Science Part A - Chemistry

The infrared spectra (4000–650 cm−1) of a series of polyurethane elastomers synthesized from polytetrahydrofuran, diphenylmethane-4,4′-diisocyanate, and ethylenediamine were examined. By comparing the spectra with those of the constituent polytetrahydrofuran and of the model compounds for the hard segments of the elas…

The growth and dissolution of potassium sulphate crystals in a fluidized bed crystallizer

J.W. Mullin、Czeslaw Gaska1969-08-01The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering

Abstract The nucleation, growth and dissolution characteristics of potassium sulphate have been studied in a laboratory scale fluidized bed crystallizer under carefully controlled conditions of temperature, supersaturation and solution velocity. Aqueous solutions of potassium sulphate can withstand high degrees of sup…

Engineersʼ Guide to the Elementary Behavior of Radon Daughters

Robley D. Evans1969-08-01Health Physics

This review emphasizes the fundamental physical principles which describe the growth and decay of the members of a series of radioactive substances. The mathematical procedures are held to the minimum essentials. Graphs and tables are provided for the illustrative case of the “daughter products” of radon (RaA, RaB, Ra…

Origin of the γ relaxations in polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene

R. W. Gray、N. G. McCrum1969-08-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-2 Polymer Physics

Abstract Mechanical relaxation has been studied at 0.67 cps in linear polyethylene (LPE) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) between −190 and −20°C. Specimens were prepared by use of various thermal treatments to produce in LPE a range of crystalline fractions from 0.690 to 0.825 and in PTFE from 0.615 to 0.870. An emp…

Soil Minerals in the Al2O3-SiO2-H2O System and a Theory of Their Formation

J. A. Kittrick1969-08-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract An attempt has been made to assemble the best thermodynamic information currently available for soil minerals in the Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -H 2 O system at 25°C and 1 atm. Montmorillonite is included by considering its aluminum silicate phase. Diagrams are presented so that the stability of the minerals can be visu…

Effect of the Nature of the Substratum on the Force Required to Detach a Common Littoral Alga

H. Barnes、Jerry A. Topinka1969-08-01American Zoologist

It has been shown that the force required to detach the holdfasts of Fucus vesiculosus depends upon the nature of the substratum; adhesion is less to barnacle shells. The loweradhesion appears to be due to a partial dissolution of the shell by acidic material, probably exndates. Growth of germlings on various substrat…

The activity of commercial water gas shift catalysts

Douglas M. Ruthven1969-08-01The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering

Abstract Published kinetic data for commercial water gas shift catalysts are interpreted in terms of pore diffusional effects. The Arrhenius plots of apparent activity show the curvature typical of the transition from reaction to pore diffusion control and the apparent activities of different catalyst pellets vary qui…

Refinement of the Structure of Tohdite 5Al2O3·H2O

Goro Yamaguchi、Masataro Okumiya、Shuichiro Ono1969-08-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The structure of tohdite, 5Al2O3·H2O, was determined by Yamaguchi Yanagida, and Ono (1964). Least-squares refinements based on their structure have been carried out using X-ray-powder data. The final R factor of the reflection intensity reduced to 0.08 from the initial value of 0.26.

Block polymers of isocyanates and vinyl monomers by homogeneous anionic polymerization

R. A. Godfrey、Gerald W. Miller1969-08-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract The “living” polymer method was used to prepare block polymers of vinyl monomers and isocyanates at low temperatures in toluene–tetrahydrofuran mixtures. Vinyl monomers and diisocyanates, which have one hindered isocyanate group, as in 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate, form block polymers which contain pendant reacti…

CaO: II, Properties*

R. W. Rice1969-08-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Strength and fracture properties of single and polycrystalline CaO are presented along with some optical and hydration properties. Single crystals have optical transmission from about 0.2 to 12 μm, wider than MgO in both the infrared and ultraviolet, but develop absorption, particularly at 2.75 μm, from atmospheric at…

Isolation of potential contrast in the scanning electron microscope

C.W. Oatley1969-08-01Journal of Physics E Scientific Instruments

Contrast in a scanning electron microscope can arise from potential variations on the surface of the specimen or from a number of other causes such as the topography of the surface. A method is described whereby contrast resulting from potential variations on the specimen appears in the final display, whereas contrast…

The thermal conductivity of nickel and its alloys

T. Farrell、D. Greig1969-08-01Journal of Physics C Solid State Physics

The thermal conductivity of pure nickel and a number of dilute Ni -Co, Ni -Fe, Ni -Cu and Ni -Pd alloys has been measured in the temperature range 2-100 °K. An attempted separation of the measured conductivity into its electronic and lattice components indicates rather large deviations from the thermal equivalent of M…

R. J. Bratton1969-08-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Results are presented for the initial‐stage sintering of spinel in air at 1050° to 1300°C. Spinel powders of high purity were prepared from magnesium‐aluminum hydroxide coprecipitates by calcining at 1100°C for 4 h. The sintering mechanism is volume diffusion, and the temperature dependence of the apparent diffusion c…
