Product Engineering of Safety Apparel Fabrics: Insulation Characteristics of Fire-Retardant Cottons

W.F. Baitinger1979-04-01Textile Research Journal

The heat-ipsulation characteristics of eighteen fire-retardant-treated fabrics; two Nomex fabrics, and a Kynol fabric are examined. Exposure both to flame and to radiation sources is employed. For a low level of radiation exposure, fabric thickness correlates well with protection time. As incident heat flux is increas…

Pressure-induced ferroelastic phase transition inPb3(PO4)2: A neutron-diffraction study

D. L. Decker、Søren D. Petersen、D. Debray 等 4 位作者1979-04-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

A ferroelastic phase change is observed in P${\mathrm{b}}_{3}$${(\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{O}}_{4})}_{2}$ near 20 kbar at ambient temperature by neutron diffraction. The rhombohedral $\ensuremath{\beta}$ phase above the transition pressure shows a domain-size broadening similar to that observed in the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ ph…

TEMPERATURE DEPENDENT PITCH IN CHOLESTERIC PHASE

Hajime Kimura、Masahito Hosino、Huzio Nakano1979-04-01Le Journal de Physique Colloques

Orientational ordering in the cholesteric liquid crystal is investigated theoretically by assuming the intermolecular force as the sum of a repulsion of hard-core with shape of twisted rod and of dispersion forces of Maier-Saupe type and of Goossens type. A method of symmetry breaking potential is applied to obtain th…

Static Field Breakdown of SF6-N2 Mixtures in Rod-Plane Gaps

N. H. Malik、A. H. Qureshi、G.D. Theophilus1979-04-01IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation

The static field breakdown and corona characteristics of SF6-N2 mixtures in non-uniform field gaps for applied voltages of positive and negative polarities are discussed. Mixtures containing 0 to 100% SF6 are studied over a pressure range of 100 to 500 kPa. The results show that for such gaps, the dielectric behavior…

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Silicon Carbide and Silicon Nitride—Chemistry's Contribution to Modern Silicon Ceramics

E. Fitzer、Dieter Hegen1979-04-01Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English

Abstract Pure silicon carbide and silicon nitride have valuable properties in bulk pore‐free form; however, their industrial exploitation has hardly been possible so far. Neither compound can be melted or sintered in pure form; hot pressing or sintering at normal pressure requires the presence of additives; and the re…

Difference Methods and Deferred Corrections for Ordinary Boundary Value Problems

Herbert B. Keller、Víctor Pereyra1979-04-01SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis

Compact as possible difference schemes for systems of nth order equations are developed. Generalizations of the Mehrstellenverfahren and simple theoretically sound implementations of deferred corrections are given. It is shown that higher order systems are more efficiently solved as given rather than as reduced to lar…

The Influence of Plastic Encapsulants and Passivation Layers on the Corrosion of Thin Aluminium Films Subjected to Humidity Stress

Seong-Ju Sim、R W Lawson1979-04-01IEEE International Reliability Physics Symposium proceedings

The study of moisture induced aluminium corrosion in the presence of passivation layers and plastic encapsulants has shown that the corrosion rate is determined by the surface conductivity of the water layer that forms on the die surface. The surface conductivity is determined by the external environment and the adhes…

11—A STUDY OF YARN TORQUE AND ITS DEPENDENCE ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF FIBRE TENSILE STRESS IN THE YARN PART I: THEORETICAL ANALYSIS

Judith Bennett、R. Postle1979-04-01Journal of the Textile Institute

The torque generated during yarn-twisting is considered to have three components, due, respectively, to fibre torsion, fibre-bending, and the internal fibre tensile and compressive stresses within the yarn. An analysis of the yarn torque generated by fibre torsion will be given in a later paper, and the component due…

Hydrolysis of p-NN′-phenylenebismaleimide and its adducts with cysteine. Implications for cross-linking of proteins

Peter J. Knight1979-04-01Biochemical Journal

To understand the extent of the cross-linking of proteins by the bifunctional reagent p-NN'-phenylenebismaleimide, a quantitative study of competing reactions has been undertaken. The two reactive maleimide rings of the bismaleimide are hydrolysed in mildly alkaline aqueous solutions much more rapidly than is the sing…

J. F. Currie、A. Blumen、Michael A. Collins 等 4 位作者1979-04-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

In this article we apply the theory developed in the previous publication to the uniaxial displacive ferroelectrics ${\mathrm{Pb}}_{5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{3}$${\mathrm{O}}_{11}$ and SbSI. We show that the parameters of our model can be determined from available experimental data for these substances. The values obtained a…

Investigation of nematic ordering using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation

S. K. Saha、George K. Wong1979-04-01Applied Physics Letters

The macroscopic third-order nonlinearity Γ of a nematic liquid crystal has been measured for the first time with the technique of dc electric-field-induced optical second-harmonic generation. The effect of nematic ordering on Γ is observed. Results are in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

The Effect of Dislocations in Ga1 − x Al x As : Si Light‐Emitting Diodes

R. J. Roedel、A. R. Von Neida、R. Caruso 等 4 位作者1979-04-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

Dislocations in LED's were studied and found to have a pronounced effect upon the external quantum efficiency of the diodes. A simple theoretical model, based on the postulation that the dislocations act as effective nonradiative recombination centers, is proposed to explain the experimental results. It is observed th…

Segregation-induced embrittlement of grain boundaries

Deborah D. Mason1979-04-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Conditions are discussed under which an interface, possibly containing an adsorbed species, is capable of sustaining an atomistically sharp cleavage crack, rather than having any such crack blunt out via dislocation nucleation. Two models for ductile versus brittle interface response are discussed. One of these is app…
