The alkyl group in 7-alkyl-5, 8-dihydroxy-α-tetralone was extended from C2 to C10 and their oxidation with ferric chloride was examined. It was found that oxidation is effected irrespective of the length of alkyl group and 2-alkyl-8-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone derivatives are obtained in good yield. The melting point…
A detailed description of the operation, equipment, and quality control used in the commercial production of electrolytic copper powder is presented. The effect of electrochemical and mechanical variables on the physical characteristics of electrolytic copper powder is also reviewed.
The anodic dissolution of a magnesium AZ10A alloy has been studied by measuring corrosion rates and electrode potentials as functions of current density, p H, and electrolyte concentration. Results are interpreted in terms of a rate‐controlling proton transfer step through a surface film of magnesium oxide and/or hydr…

Several experiments are discussed from the standpoint of their implications on the role of the corrosion product film formed on aluminum during uniform aqueous corrosion both as the principal form of corrosion and as a prelude to intergranular penetration. The experiments include barrier film measurements, the effect…

A critical analysis of the literature on pitting corrosion published during the past 35 years is presented. The definition of pitting and the factors influencing this type of attack are considered. An examination of the theories of pitting corrosion and the methods used to study this form of corrosion are also include…
Abstract Von den drei Verbindungen Bariumorthostannat(IV), Ba 2 SnO 4 , Bariummetaplumbat(IV), BaPbO 3 , und Bariumorthoplumbat(IV), Ba 2 PbO 4 , wurden mit dem Zählrohrgoniometer Pulver‐Diagramme hergestellt. Für das erstmals dargestellte BaPbO 3 wurde in Analogie zum BaSnO 3 das kubische Perowskitgitter gefunden mit…

Abstract Samples of Ziegler‐type polyethylene containing no additives were placed in a temperature‐programmed oven, melted, and subsequently cooled at constant rates. Average spherulite size, based on the measurement of fifty spherulites, and impact strength by a falling ball method were determined for different cooli…
A general rate equation is derived for a model of a barrier scale layer being formed by a diffusion process and simultaneously being depleted at a constant rate by a secondary process. The equation, derived to satisfy rate curves for sulflde scaling of iron in hydrogen sulfide, is shown to be applicable to the oxidati…
Two mechanisms have been proposed to account for the observed large yield of secondary electrons in gaseous breakdown at high electric fields. In one of these a single ion in approaching the cathode surface creates a ``pass'' by decreasing the width of the potential barrier. In the other the increased over-all field d…

Abstract The theory of the stability of lyophobic colloids, as given by Derjaguin and by Verwey and Overbeek for the flat‐plate model or the sphere model of colloidal particles, is applied to cylindershaped colloidal particles. Anisometry was taken into account by considering the interaction between two parallel parti…
A metallographic study of the high‐temperature oxidation of titanium, zirconium, and hafnium has shown that alterations in the rate equations relating to such processes may be associated with the establishment of oxygen diffusion gradients in the surface layers of the metal. It has been shown that these diffusion grad…
Abstract Trapped free radicals are formed when polyethylene is irradiated with cobalt‐60 gamma rays in the absence of any reactive species‐oxygen, monomer, etc. The net free radical population formed increases with increasing total dose, decreasing temperature of irradiation, and increasing crystallinity of the polyme…
An alkaline solution of hydroxylamine is caused to react with the methyl esters of pectin present in sections of plant tissues to produce hydroxamic acids which, after acidification with hydrochloric acid, yield a red color upon addition of 2.5% ferric chloride solution. The test is specific and preferable to the use…
