A treatment is given of the aberrations caused by the extension of the X-ray source, specimen and receiving slit normal to the plane of the camera or spectrometer. A detailed examination is made of the aberrations which occur: ( a ) when the height of the specimen is the sole cause, and ( b ) when the vertical diverge…
Experimental methods have been developed for creating and observing single spherical cavities in water and certain organic liquids Rapid photography permits motion analysis to be made The cavities show several cycles of expansion and collapse during their lifetime of a few milliseconds At each volume minimum a sharp p…
Since the discovery by Lohmann (1932) that reduced glutathione (GSH) is the coenzyme of glyoxalase, several workers have reported that methylglyoxal and GSH form a compound and have suggested that this might be the true substrate for the enzyme or an intermediate in the reaction. Thus Jowett & Quastel (1932) observed…
Measurements of the dielectric constants, piezoelectric constants, and elastic constants have been made for the crystal N${\mathrm{D}}_{4}$${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$P${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ (heavy water ADP). This crystallizes in the same form as normal ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) but has a transition at -31\ifmmode^\circ\…
Theoretical analyses of the torsional recovery of filaments and singles yarns and the ply back-twist required to give balanced plied yarns are presented. The methodology employed parallels that previously reported for filament bending recovery [4]. The filaments are assumed to be linearly elastic for shear stresses be…
In cuprous oxide we discovered a new hydrogen-like absorption spectrum beside that in the previous work. Thus we have two groups of hydrogen-like energy levels, of which the one previously found seems to be due to a self-trapped electron and the other newly found on the other hand, seems to be due to an exciton and le…
We used borax to obtain homogenous solid solutions of thorium and uranium dioxides in the temperature range
Information is presented which indicates that standards are still inadequate to differentiate clearly the temperature classes of insulation and several changes are suggested to improve and broaden those standards.
T he res ul ts of m easurements of the corrosion of galvan ized steel and of bare steel and zinc as reference materials after exposure to different soil co ndi tions for a maximum of 13 years arc reported. The magnitude and progress of co rrosion of galvanized steel as determ ined by weight loss and pitting is interpr…
Further quantitative data bearing on the scabbing of metals under explosive attack are presented in this paper. In particular, the mechanics of the generation of multiple scabs is established. Experimental data have been obtained that show that multiple scabbing will occur whenever the maximum stress σ0 in the transie…
The hafnium-hydrogen system at room temperature consists of three phases. The lattice parameters of the hafnium metal used in this investigation and of the three phases are as follows: hafnium, a0=3.200A, c0=5.061A, and c=1.58; deformed cubic phase, a0=4.702±0.012A, c0=4.678±0.012A, and c=0.995; face-centered cubic ph…
The molecular weight of lysozyme has been redetermined by the ultracentrifuge as 14,100 ± 500. The molecule appears to be a stubby prolate ellipsoid of rotation, with a maximum length of 90 Å and a minimum equatorial diameter of about 18 Å depending on the degree of hydration assumed. Alternative possibilities of chai…
The crystal structure of realgar, AsS, has been worked out by the Fourier-synthesis method, using Weissenberg photographs (Cu Ka 2. ~-1.54/~). The signs for F's were initially derived by the phaseinequality relations of Harkcr & Kasper. The unit cell has a ~ 9.27, b ~ 13.50, c ----6.56 A, fl --106 37'. The space group…

The structure, thermal properties, electrical characteristics, and mechanical behavior of graphite are reviewed and the highly anisotropic character of graphite crystals is emphasized. The interesting properties of graphite are due in large measure to the strong semimetallic bonds between carbon atoms in plane layers…
A metallographic study was made of the diffusion zones present in copper-α-brass, copper-nickel, and gold-silver diffusion couples. Usual sandwich type couples and also vapor-solid type couples in which the higher vapor pressure component was diffused either into or out of the couple through the vapor phase were inves…
In the first part of this paper (1952, pp. 436-450), the structural states of the pure compounds KAlSi3O8 and NaAlSi3O8 have been discussed. This part considers the mixed-crystal series of these compounds and their unmixed states.
