Amorphous carbon (a-C) thin films have been prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering of graphite targets in an Ar atmosphere and their d.c. electrical dark conductivity has been measured as a function of temperature. The results are compared with those obtained by earlier workers for a-C and hydrogenated a-C. A detailed…

The reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of aluminum isopropoxide and yttrium acetate in 1,4‐butanediol at 300°C yielded crystalline yttrium aluminum garnet having an approximate particle size of 30 nm. No other phases were detected. The use of ethylene glycol in place of 1,4‐butanediol afforded an amorphous product.

Fairly monodisperse colloidal boehmite fibrils with a high aspect ratio were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment at 150°C of an acidified aqueous alkoxide solution, prepared by adding an aqueous HCl solution to an aluminum alkoxide precursor. The average particle length could be controlled between about 100 and 500…

Ten dental casting alloys were tested for alloy-element release into cell-culture medium, and this release was related to alloy composition, alloy microstructure, and alloy cytotoxicity (previously determined). Cell-culture medium was analyzed for alloy elements by flame atomic absorption. Concentrations of elements i…

Grain growth in a high‐purity ZnO with systematic additions of Sb 2 O 3 from 0.29 to 2.38 wt% was studied for sintering in air from 1106° to 1400°C. The results are discussed and compared with previous studies of pure ZnO and ZnO with Bi 2 O 3 additions in terms of the kinetic grain growth expression: G n – G n 0 = K…

The sintering of zinc oxide powder compacts has been investigated at constant rates of heating of 0.5° to 15°C/min. For samples with the same initial relative density (0.50), the temperature derivative of the densification strain versus density fits within a single, relatively narrow band. At low temperatures the dens…

Abstract The basal spacing of a set of smectites, with layer charges between 0.74 and 1.14 electrons per unit cell, have been measured while the smectites were in equilibrium with NaCl solutions having concentrations of 0.25 to 2.5 molal. Except for the most highly charged smectites, an expansion from ~15.5 to ~18.5 Å…
