Why are metal foams stable?

Astrid Haibel、Alexander Rack、John Banhart2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

Although metal foams are becoming accepted engineering materials, the reason for their stability in the liquid state is still under dispute. Liquid metal foams contain solid constituents which according to the existing models stabilize foam films by either modifying the curvature of the liquid/gas (L∕G) interfaces, or…

Millimeter-wave magnetoelectric effects in bilayers of barium hexaferrite and lead zirconate titanate

G. Srinivasan、I. V. Zavislyak、А. С. Татаренко2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

Millimeter-wave magnetoelectric interactions have been studied through electric field effects on magnetic excitations in bilayers of single crystal barium ferrite and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). An electric field E produces a mechanical deformation in PZT, resulting in a shift δf in the frequency for electromagneti…

Defect structure in micropillars using x-ray microdiffraction

R. Maaβ、Daniel Grolimund、S. Van Petegem 等 11 位作者2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

White beam x-ray microdiffraction is used to investigate the microstructure of micron-sized Si, Au, and Al pillars fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) machining. Comparison with a Laue pattern obtained from a Si pillar made by reactive ion etching reveals that the FIB damages the Si structure. The Laue reflections ob…

Three-dimensional imaging of nonspherical silicon nanoparticles embedded in silicon oxide by plasmon tomography

Aycan Yurtsever、Matthew Weyland、David A. Muller2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

Silicon nanoparticles embedded in silica show promising optoelectronic properties, due to quantum confinement and/or radiative interface states that should correlate with the particles’ average size and shape. Here the authors report the combination of electron tomography with plasmon-filtered microscopy in order to r…

Ultraviolet photodetectors with ZnO nanowires prepared on ZnO:Ga/glass templates

Chien-Yuan Lu、Shoou‐Jinn Chang、Sheng-Po Chang 等 9 位作者2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

Vertically well-aligned ZnO nanowire ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors were fabricated by spin-on-glass technology on ZnO:Ga/glass templates. With 2V applied bias, it was found that dark current density of the fabricated device was only 2.0×10−7A∕cm2. It was also found that UV-to-visible rejection ratio and quantum effi…

Collapse of Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes in the Presence of Multivalent Counterions

Yu Mei、Karlheinz Lauterbach、Martin Hoffmann 等 6 位作者2006-10-09Physical Review Letters

We consider the interaction of multivalent counterions with spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). The SPB result if linear polyelectrolyte (PE) chains (contour length: 60 nm) are densely grafted to colloidal spheres of 116 nm in diameter. Dispersed in water, the surface layer consisting of chains of the strong PE p…

Single-domain versus two-domain configuration in thin ferromagnetic prisms

Maria Gloria Pini、Paolo Politi2006-10-09arXiv

Thin ferromagnetic elements in the form of rectangular prisms are theoretically investigated in order to study the transition from single-domain to two-domain state, with changing the in-plane aspect ratio p. We address two main questions: first, how general is the transition; second, how the critical value p_c depend…

Unusual conductance of polyyne-based molecular wires

Z. Crljen、G. Baranovic2006-10-09arXiv

We report a full self-consistent ab initio calculation of the current-voltage curve and the conductance of thiolate capped polyynes in contact with gold electrodes. We find the conductance of polyynes an order of magnitude larger compared with other conjugated oligomers. The reason lies in the position of the Fermi le…

Optical properties of cubic Ti3N4, Zr3N4, and Hf3N4

Ming Xu、Songyou Wang、Gang Yin 等 7 位作者2006-10-09Applied Physics Letters

A systematic theoretical study is presented for the electronic, mechanical, and optical properties of cubic Ti3N4, Zr3N4, and Hf3N4 with the Th3P4 structure in the framework of density functional theory. The calculated band structures of Ti3N4, Zr3N4, and Hf3N4 show the indirect band gaps of 0.268, 0.909, and 1.00eV,…

A Manganese(III) Complex That Exhibits Spin Crossover Triggered by Geometric Tuning

Grace G. Morgan、Kevin D. Murnaghan、Helge Müller‐Bunz 等 5 位作者2006-10-09Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Room to expand: A rare example of thermal spin crossover in a MnIII complex is accompanied by elongation of the bonds to the equatorial N4 donor set upon warming (see scheme; Mn purple, N blue, O red), which is consistent with population of the d orbital. The spin crossover was observed for an N4(O−)2 donor set with a…

Memory Effect of Activated Mg–Al Hydrotalcite: In Situ XRD Studies during Decomposition and Gas‐Phase Reconstruction

Javier Pérez‐Ramírez、Sònia Abelló、Niek M. van der Pers2006-10-09Chemistry - A European Journal

The thermal decomposition of Mg-Al hydrotalcite and the subsequent reconstruction of the decomposed products in the presence of water vapor (2 vol. % H(2)O in N(2)) have been investigated by in situ XRD. Thermographic analysis and temperature-programmed desorption MS results complemented the diffraction data. Valuable…

Electronic structure of graphite/6H-SiC interfaces

Th. Seyller、K. V. Emtsev、F. Speck 等 5 位作者2006-10-09arXiv

We have studied the electronic structure of the interface between 6H-SiC{0001} and graphite. On n-type and p-type 6H-SiC(0001) we observe Schottky barriers of Phi_b,n^Si= 0.3+-0.1eV and Phi_b,p^Si=2.7+-0.1eV, respectively. The observed barrier is face specific: on n-type 6H-SiC(000-1) we find Phi_b,n^C=1.3+-0.1eV. The…
