Rate studies were made for the oxygen‐free reaction between steel powder and , both uninhibited and inhibited. In particular, it was shown that the retardation of the reaction by organic polar compounds was influenced more markedly by molecular structure than by molecular weight or area.

The dielectric constant and loss have been measured for several linear polyamides over a range of frequency and temperature. At low frequencies and elevated temperatures, proton conduction through the amorphous regions gives rise to a Maxwell-Wagner loss, while at high frequencies and high temperatures dipole relaxati…

Abstract The nature of the intermolecular interactions involving the CN groups in organic nitriles has been investigated through comparison of the physical properties of nitriles and other organic liquids. Evidence is presented that hydrogen bonding is not a significant factor in these interactions. The CN groups tend…

Evidence is presented in this paper to show that crystals present a pla8tic 'resistarwe to dislocation motion. This has been demonstrated by direct observations of dislocations in LiF crystals by Johnston and Gilman, and in Fe-Si crystals by Stein and Low. The plastic resistance is almost independent of dislocation ve…

Abstract The pure salts Na 2 S 2 , K 2 S 2 , K 2 S 3 , Na 2 S 4 , K 2 S 4 and K 2 S 5 have been prepared. Titration curves of these polysulfides in aqueous solution have been obtained with a special streaming apparatus, with which the mixing of the polysulfide solution with HCl and the pH determination of the fresh mi…

Abstract : The study of the deposition processes in pyrolytic graphite, made from the gas phase, has been largely empirical. The work presented attempts to show that the deposition is controlled by reactions in the gas phase. Experiments were performed at fast and slow rates of growth using natural, pyrolytic, and com…

The rate of oxidation of zirconium followed a cubic rate law in the temperature range 400°–900°C at oxygen pressures of 50, 200, and 800 mm. At 200 mm the activation energy was calculated to be 42.7 ± 0.7 kcal / mole . The oxidation of zirconium binary alloys containing 1, 2, and 4 atom % of aluminum, beryllium, carbo…

The mechanism of dislocation loop formation by vacancy condensation is examined in a quantitative manner. The critical vacancy supersaturation necessary for the growth of the loops and the climb rate of the dislocations are determined. It is shown that the mechanism proposed for lineage formation based upon loop growt…
