Sorption of Anionic Surfactants with Wood Charcoal

Itsusei Fujita、Jyo Tomooka、Tsugiharu Sugimura1991-02-01Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract The possibility of wood charcoal as an adsorbent, not as an energy source as in the past, was confirmed by the use of an anionic surfactant as the model adsorbate, and a trial sorption of polluting substances in an actual river by a wood charcoal column was conducted.

EXAFS Study of Cation Distribution in Nickel Aluminate Ferrites

Takeshi Yao、O. Imafuji、Hiroshi Jinno1991-02-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A new method for analyzing the cation distribution of spinel crystals by extended X‐ray absorption fine‐structure spectroscopy has been developed to overcome the disadvantage of X‐ray diffraction, which cannot readily distinguish among different transition‐metal ions. EXAFS analysis was conducted on Ni 2+ and Fe 3+ io…

Sign reversal of the electroclinic coefficient in the smectic B* phase

L. Komitov、K. Flatischler、Gunnar B. J. Andersson 等 8 位作者1991-02-01Ferroelectrics

In the B phase of a chiral epoxy compound and its mixtures with an achiral liquid crystal material, a sign reversal in the electroclinic coefficient is observed. The temperature where the coefficient vanishes has been found to be almost independent on the concentration of the chiral molecules. A simple explanation is…

Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) for Conventional Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)

Masashi Iwatsuki、Ken-ichi Murooka、Shinichi Kitamura 等 5 位作者1991-02-01Journal of Electron Microscopy

In order to identify an observation area with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and a particular area of the specimen, we developed a holder-type STM for an ultrahigh vacuum transmission electron microscope (UHV-TEM), operating in a reflection electron microscopy mode (REM). This instrument has been improved in th…

Andrew W. Maverick、Marc D. Lord、Qin Yao 等 4 位作者1991-02-01Inorganic Chemistry

A study of the solution photophysical and photoredox properties of ReCl62- and ReBr62- is reported. The solutions are phosphorescent at room temperature, with emission maxima (lifetimes) of 1340 nm (80 ns) and 1380 nm (40 ns) for (Bu4N)2[ReCl6] and (Bu4N)2[ReBr6], respectively, in CH3CN. The phosphorescences are assig…

ESCA and SIMS studies of plasma treatments of intraocular lenses

J. S. Brinen、S. Greenhouse、L. Pinatti1991-02-01Surface and Interface Analysis

Abstract The surfaces of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lenses (IOL) modified by treatment in a plasma containing various fluorine‐containing gases were studied by surface analytical techniques. The hydrophobicity imparted to the lens surface was monitored by water contact angle measurements and the degree…

A Kinetic model of crack fusion

Zbigniew Czechowski1991-02-01Geophysical Journal International

The paper presents a kinetic approach to the problem of fusion of cracks. A kinetic equation for the size distribution function of cracks is derived. By division of all cracks into three groups a set of three simple equations is obtained. From a numerical analysis of the simple model we conclude that periodic solution…

Mesophase formed by diabolo‐like molecules

Jacques Malthête、Anne‐Marie Levelut1991-02-01Advanced Materials

Communciation: Mesogenic disc‐like compounds possessing a high permanent electric dipole moment are of interest as they offer the possibility of orientating columnar mesophases. The structure (schematically shown in the figure) which is similar to the well‐known toy “Diabolo”, and phase behavior of only the second exa…

Abstract Selective dehydrogenation of 2-propanol was performed with a suspended nickel fine-particle catalyst at high activity under refluxing conditions. The isotope effects, kH⁄kD for (CH3)2CDOH and (CD3)2CDOD were found to be 2.56 and 2.69, respectively, in contrast to 1.68 for (CH3)2CHOD, suggesting that the C–H b…

Thin static drops with a free attachment boundary

E. O. Tuck、Leonard W. Schwartz1991-02-01Journal of Fluid Mechanics

A thin fluid drop is at rest on a plane vertical surface, supported against gravity by surface tension. The perimeter of the drop is required to lie on a given closed curve, upon which the contact angle is arbitrary. If the drop is of sufficient volume, it can wet the whole area interior to this curve. However, for an…
