Yasushi Nakayama、G. Smets1967-07-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract The rate of homopolymerization of maleimide has been measured in dimethylformamide solution at 60°C. in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile; it has been compared to that of N‐n ‐butylmaleimide. The overall rates of polymerization are equal to R p = k [M] 1.1–1.2 [In] 0.8 for maleimide, and R p = k '[M] [In…

Corrosion and Heat Transfer — A Review*

T Ross1967-07-01British Corrosion Journal

The general features of heat exchange phenomena are reviewed, and their influence upon corrosion processesin liquids is outlined. The experimental techniques previously used by others are surveyed and new ones based upon an analysis of the problem are suggested. The presentation of data obtained by these methods is il…

Grafting of maleic anhydride on polyethylene. I. Mechanism of grafting in a heterogeneous medium in the presence of radical initiators

Włodżimierz Gabara、Stanisław Porejko1967-07-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Polyethylene has been grafted with maleic anhydride, as proved by the infrared spectra and the properties of the grafted films. The influence of oxygen and a comparison of the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide and AIBN showed that polyethylene macroradicals are formed through the decomposition of hydroperoxid…

Influence of Sulfur on the Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic Stainless Steel

B. E. Wilde、J.S. Armijo1967-07-01CORROSION

The influence of sulfur in the range 80 to 1700 ppm on the corrosion resistance of a 14 wt % Cr-14 wt % Ni-balance Fe alloy has been determined in various media. In general, high purity alloys containing sulfur are shown to have excellent general corrosion resistance to oxidizing and nonoxidizing acids when compared w…

Cation Exchange Capacity Variations with pH in Soil Clays

J. M. de Villiers、M. L. Jackson1967-07-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Soil clays containing pedogenically chloritized 2:1 layer silicates, after brief contact at 25C with 2% Na 2 CO 3 (pH 11), developed a proportionately large increment of CEC which was retained after thorough washing with neutral salts (KCl, NaCl) to reduce the pH value below 7. A soil clay from Natal, S. Afri…

Thermal Conductivity and Heat Capacity of the Monocarbide, Monophosphide, and Monosulfide of Uranium

Johann Moser、O.L. Kruger1967-07-01Journal of Applied Physics

The heat-transport properties and heat capacity of UC, UP, and US were determined between room temperature and 600°C. These properties were measured by a transient technique with a laser as a heat pulse source. The thermal conductivity was calculated from the product of the thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, and dens…

Oxidative degradation of polystyrene

Harold C. Beachell、Leonard H. Smiley1967-07-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A-1 Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and ultraviolet spectroscopy were used to elucidate the structure of oxidized polystyrene. To identify the nuclear magnetic resonance peaks of the degraded polystyrene, deuterated polystyrenes were synthesized and degraded. The primary structure present in the degraded po…

Technique for the Determination of Dynamic-Tensile-Strength Characteristics

B. R. Breed、Charles L. Mader、Douglas Venable1967-07-01Journal of Applied Physics

A technique for the examination of the dynamic-tensile-strength characteristics of materials is presented. The dependence of tensile strength upon stress gradient, hence stress rate, is demonstrated for Al, Cu, Ni, and Pb. The results were tested and found to be self-consistent in that once the dynamic-tensile-strengt…

Climb kinetics of dislocation loops in aluminium

P. S. Dobson、P.J. Goodhew、R.E. Smallman1967-07-01Philosophical magazine

The climb kinetics of dislocation loops in thin foils in terms of either the emission of vacancies from the loop or the diffusion of vacancies to the surface has been critically examined. Although both mechanisms give similar rate equations, predictions can be made which allow the rate controlling process to be determ…

Hygroscopic Effects on Weight Determinations of Particulates Collected on Glass-Fiber Filters

Gregory P. Tierney、William D. Conner1967-07-01American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal

The effect of relative humidity on the tare weight of glass-fiber filters was insignificant, but the effect on collected particulates was significant when the humidity exceeded 55%. When particulate samples were weighed at relative humidities below 55%, weight variations did not exceed 1%.
