Fracture Resistance Behavior of Silicon Carbide Whisker‐Reinforced Alumina Composites with Different Porosities

R. F. Krause、Edwin R. Fuller、James F. Rhodes1990-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Fracture resistance behavior was characterized for SiC‐whisker‐reinforced alumina composites with porosities ranging from 0.6% to 11.5% The composites were hot‐pressed from an Al 2 O 3 powder with 25 wt% SiC whiskers. Strengths of individual specimens were measured in four‐point flexure either for natural flaws or for…

Poly(methyl methacrylate) degradation during x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis

L.P. Buchwalter、George Czornyj1990-03-01Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A Vacuum Surfaces and Films

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was chosen as a model lithographic material to study the effect of A1 Kα radiation and the thermal (flood gun) electron flux on polymer surface. The main chemical changes, which can occur in polymers by radiation, are (1) main-chain scission, (2) cross linking, and (3) volatile product…

Quinoid vs aromatic structure of polyisothianaphthene

J. Kürti、Péter R. Śurján1990-03-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

We show that the optimum structure of polyisothianaphthene strongly depends on the chain length. Short oligomers have an aromatic structure, while chains consisting of more than 9 monomers exhibit an aromatic to quinoidal transition along the chain.

Study of Formation, Phase Behavior, and Microdroplet Size of a Polyurethane-based Polymer-dispersed Liquid Crystal

G. Smith1990-03-01Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals Incorporating Nonlinear Optics

Using calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, we have investigated the formation process and phase behavior of a polyurethane-based polymer-dispersed liquid crystal system. We have measured the kinetics and energetics of the cure process during which liquid crystal microdroplets form by phase separation from the…

Flocculation Concentration and Sodium/Calcium Exchange of Kaolinitic Soil Clays

W. P. Miller、Kimberley D. Newman、H. Frenkel1990-03-01Soil Science Society of America Journal

Abstract Clay dispersion in southeastern USA soils needs to be better characterized, because dispersion influences crusting, infiltration, and erosion of field soils. In order to study dispersion of highly weathered soils, clays separated from Ap and Bt horizons of three soil series from the Georgia Piedmont were equi…

Pulsing direct current‐induced repair of articular cartilage in rabbit osteochondral defects

Louis Lippiello、Dennis A. Chakkalakal、John F. Connolly1990-03-01Journal of Orthopaedic Research®

Osteochondral defects in the distal femoral condyles of rabbits exposed to a pulsing direct current exhibits an enhanced quality of repair. The signal, with a peak value of 2 microA repeating at 100 Hz, imposed an electric field in the tissue of 20-60 mV/cm2. Maximum efficacy was seen with a shorter period of exposure…

Considerations of grain orientation and work hardening on short-fatigue-crack modelling

E. R. De Los Rio、A. Navarro1990-03-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Methods which consider the effect of grain orientation and work hardening on short-fatigue-crack growth are examined. Fatigue cracks are assumed to form in the most favourably oriented grains on the surface of the specimen and propagate through less well oriented grains. A method of deriving the sequence of orientatio…

Sintering of Spherical Glass Powder under a Uniaxial Stress

Mohamed N. Rahaman、Lutgard C. De Jonghe1990-03-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The sintering of spherical borosilicate glass powder (particle size 5 to 10 μm) under a uniaxial stress was studied at 800°C. The experiments allowed the measurement of the kinetics of densification and creep, the viscosities for creep and bulk deformation, and the sintering stress which was found to increase with den…

Dynamical properties of two-dimensional quasicrystals

J. A. Ashraff、J. M. Luck、R B Stinchcombe1990-03-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Electron and phonon spectra, densities and integrated densities of states, and dynamic-response functions are investigated for a variety of two-dimensional (2D) quasicrystals. The dynamical properties of a Fibonacci chain, extended both periodically and quasiperiodically into a second dimension, are obtained using an…
