Abstract A mathematical model for prediction of the crystal size distribution from a continuous crystallizer is presented. The kinetic data used for the model were obtained from batch contact nucleation experiments with citric acid monohydrate. In these experiments, the distribution of growth rates as well as the init…

The shear flow of nematic Liquid crystals with a positive value of the Leslie viscosity α3 is studied theoretically. Under the assumption that the director will remain in the plane of shear, the equations governing the flow are solved numerically and the director- and velocity-profile are calculated. The validity of t…

As is well known, electron energy loss spectroscopy can be used to determine the relative sample thickness in the electron microscope. This paper considers how such measurements can be applied to biological samples in order to obtain the mass thickness for quantitative X-ray microanalysis. The important quantity in es…

Tetrasulfonated iron phthalocyanines ( FePcS ) can be incorporated into electronically conducting polypyrrole by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of FePcS . The FePcS modified glassy carbon electrodes catalyzed the reduction of O 2 at potentials 250 to 800 mV less negative than at bare glassy…

The globular domain of collagen IV was solubilized by collagenase digestion from a mouse tumor, human placenta and bovine aorta and was purified by chromatographic methods. The materials show a unique, mainly non-collagenous amino acid composition and contain small amounts of glucosamine and galactosamine. The globula…

In studies on the cause of the extreme stability of the macromolecules of Thermus thermophilus HB8, the leuB gene coding for 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase of the leucine synthesis pathway and its flanking regions were cloned and sequenced. The leuB gene of T. thermophilus was expressed in a leuB-less mutant of Esche…

Abstract Calcium carbonate fillers react with hydrogen chloride liberated during pyrolysis of PVC to an extent depending on their particle sizes and concentrations. The effects of these and other fillers on the critical oxygen index is more complex and depends on a number of factors additional to the extent of hydroge…

The population dynamics during 69 yr of 12 plankton diatom taxa in a eutrophic lake have been analyzed. The data were obtained by microstratigraphical analysis of diatom frustules in the annually laminated sediment deposited at 17 m depth in the lake. On the basis of the recurring seasonal sequence of diatoms within m…

Raman spectra were measured for a series of Na 2 O·xZnO·ySiO 2 glasses where x=O to 2 and y = 1,2, or 3. The spectra exhibit bands characteristic of sheet‐like and chain‐like strucrural units. Frequency and intensity shifts with ZnO content suggest that Zn 2+ is a simple network modifier over this composition range.

Abstract Several Pt/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by photodeposition from aqueous H2PtCl6 in the presence or absence of a CH3COOH–CH3COONa buffer. The examination of these catalysts by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the higher the buffer concentration, the more highly reduced the deposited platinu…
