Study of ferroelectric and ferroelastic domain structures by scanning electron microscopy

R. Le Bihan1989-09-01Ferroelectrics

At the beginning we present a review of the historical development of first observations of domain structures in ferroelectric and ferroelastic crystals with a SEM. A theory of the charging mechanism of an insulating sample bombarded by an electron beam gives an interpretation of experimental observations of ferroelec…

J. H. Kim、M. Chainey、M. S. El‐Aasser 等 4 位作者1989-09-01Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Previous attempts to prepare monodisperse styrene/sodium styrene sulfonate copolymer latexes by batch, seeded, and semicontinuous emulsion polymerization were unsuccessful at high concentrations of the functional comonomer. Broad, and sometimes bimodal, size distributions, and large amounts of water soluble h…

Soil properties affecting volatilization of ammonia from soils treated with urea

Dean A. Martens、J. M. Bremner1989-09-01Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis

The effects of various soil properties on ammonia (NH3) volatilization from soils treated with urea were studied by measuring the NH3 evolved when 20 soils selected to obtain a wide range in properties were incubated at ‐0.034 mPa soil moisture potential and 30°C for 10 days after treatment with urea. The nitrogen (N)…

Feeding Ecology and Radular Morphology of the Freshwater Limpet Ferrissia fragilis

W. Blinn、Anne Pickart1989-09-01Journal of the North American Benthological Society

The understory diatom species of Epithemia made up nearly 55% of the diet of the freshwater limpet Ferrissia fragilis, while these same diatom species made up <20% of the epiphyton assemblage on Nuphar leaves occupied by limpets. Furthermore, the larger, upright overstory diatom species had relatively low electivity v…

In vitro collagen fibril assembly: thermodynamic studies

George C. Na、Linda Phillips、Ernesto Freire1989-09-01Biochemistry

The in vitro fibril assembly of calf skin collagen was examined as a function of ionic strength and temperature. In a 0.03 M NaPi, pH 7.0, buffer, fibril assembly required a minimum critical concentration of collagen. At nearly physiological ionic strengths and temperatures, the critical concentration was less than 1…

1,10,-Phenanthroline as Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in Sulfuric Acid Solution

Sudipta Banerjee、Sudhir Misra1989-09-01CORROSION

1,10,-Phenanthroline (Phen) has been examined as a corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1 N H2SO4 acid solution by weight-loss and gasometric methods. Studies have also been made in 1 N HCl solution to compare the efficiency of the inhibitor in both acids. Activation energy in the presence and in the absence of the i…

High‐Temperature Behavior of the Aluminum Oxycarbide Al 2 OC in the System Al 2 O 3 –Al 4 C 3 and with Additions of Aluminum Nitride

Jean Marc Lihrmann、T. Zambetakis、M. Daire1989-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

A large number of high‐temperature experiments involving binary mixtures of alumina and aluminum carbide (Al 4 C 3 ) were performed to clarify the behavior of the aluminum oxycarbide Al 2 OC. It is first shown from heat treatments on the molar composition 55Al 2 O 3 ·45 Al 4 C 3 that, in conditions of stable equilibri…

Liquid Crystal Polarizers with Axially Symmetrical Properties

Rumiko Yamaguchi、Toshiaki Nose、Susumu Sato1989-09-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

Liquid crystal polarizers are prepared by using a common linear polarizer, a nematic liquid crystal and PVA-coated glass substrates. The surface of one substrate is treated for unidirectional molecular orientation and the other substrate is treated for concentrically circular molecular orientation. The liquid crystal…

An Analysis of TDT and Arrhenius Methods for Handling Process and Kinetic Data

Hosahalli S. Ramaswamy、F.R. van de Voort、S. Ghazala1989-09-01Journal of Food Science

ABSTRACT Thermal process calculations generally involve first order reaction kinetics which have been commonly described by the thermal death time (TDT) method in the field of food science but would normally be evaluated by the more conventional Arrhenius approach in most other fields. The relationship between these t…

Effect of Dispersants on the Rheological Properties and Slip Casting of Concentrated Alumina Slurry

Kan‐Sen Chou、L.C. Lee1989-09-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Slip casting is one of the most common forming techniques used in the fabrication of ceramics. To obtain successful casting results, one need first to fully deagglomerate the ceramic powders and get concentrated slurries with good rheological properties. In this work, the rheological properties of concentrated alumina…

Transmission electron microscope observations of dislocations and stacking faults in a decagonal Al-Cu-Co alloy

Z. Zhang、K. Urban1989-09-01Philosophical Magazine Letters

Dislocations and stacking faults have been observed for the first time in a decagonal quasicrystalline structure. The lattice defects found in the decagonal phase of A165Cu20Co15 give an electron diffraction contrast similar to that found in normal-crystalline materials.
