Magnetocaloric effect in Tb5(SixGe1−x)4

L. Morellón、César Magén、P. A. Algarabel 等 5 位作者2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

The magnetocaloric effect has been investigated in a series of the R5(SixGe1−x)4 pseudobinary alloys with R=Tb and x=0.0, 0.5, and 1.0. In Tb5Si4 and Tb5Ge4, a maximum magnetic entropy change of 9.8 and 3.7 J/kg K, respectively, has been found at their ordering temperatures for a magnetic field change of 50 kOe. In th…

CoPt/Ag nanocomposites with (001) texture

V. Karanasos、I. Panagiotopoulos、D. Niarchos 等 5 位作者2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

CoPt/Ag nanocomposites with the tetragonal (L10) structure have been prepared by magnetron sputtering. The dependence of texture on film thickness, bilayer thickness, CoPt volume fraction, and annealing conditions is investigated. Films with a thickness below 15 nm consist of islands with (001) texture while as the th…

Dynamics of dissipative ordered fluids

André M. Sonnet、Epifanio G. Virga2001-08-27Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

A variational principle is proposed that allows to derive the equations of motion for a fluid with a general microstructure described by a tensorial order parameter. The only constitutive ingredients are the densities of the free energy and the dissipation, both subject to appropriate invariance requirements. As an il…

Three-dimensional reconstruction of buried nanoparticles by element-sensitive tomography based on inelastically scattered electrons

G. Möbus、Beverley J. Inkson2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy is used to image the nanocomposite FeAl+Y2O3, an oxide-dispersion-strengthened intermetallic alloy, over a tilt range of ±60° using inelastically scattered electrons only. The properties of electron spectroscopic imaging are exploited to recover a projection relationshi…

Orientation of pentacene films using surface alignment layers and its influence on thin-film transistor characteristics

Michele Swiggers、Guodong Xia、Jason D. Slinker 等 9 位作者2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

We have investigated the effect of surface order on the orientation and mobility of pentacene. The surface order was created using monolayers and polymers that are normally used to align liquid crystals. Rubbed polyvinylalcohol layers were found to align approximately 27% of the pentacene grains within a 30° range. Wh…

A totally nonempirical relativistic cluster calculation of transition-metal ${L}_{2,3}$-edge x-ray-absorption near-edge structure including configuration interaction has been performed. A remarkable predictive power of this calculation has been demonstrated for three contrasting materials with different d-electron num…

Optical gain in Si/SiO2 lattice: Experimental evidence with nanosecond pulses

Leonid Khriachtchev、Markku Räsänen、С. В. Новиков 等 4 位作者2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

Experimental evidence of population inversion and amplified spontaneous emission was found for Si nanocrystallites embedded in SiO2 surrounding under pumping with 5 ns light pulses at 380, 400, and 500 nm. As an important property, our experiments show a short lifetime of the population inversion allowing a generation…

Indication of ferromagnetism in molecular-beam-epitaxy-derived N-type GaMnN

M. E. Overberg、C. R. Abernathy、S. J. Pearton 等 6 位作者2001-08-27Applied Physics Letters

Growth by molecular-beam epitaxy of the dilute magnetic alloy GaMnN is reported. The GaMnN contains 7.0% Mn as determined by Auger electron spectroscopy, and is single phase as determined by x-ray diffraction and reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Both magnetic and magnetotransport data are reported. The res…

Zero Energy Solutions and Vortices in Schroedinger Equations

Tsunehiro Kobayashi、Toshiki Shimbori2001-08-27arXiv

All two-dimensional Schrödinger equations with symmetric potentials \break $(V_a(ρ)=-a^2g_a ρ^{2(a-1)/2} {with} ρ=\sqrt{x^2+y^2} {and} a\not=0)$ is shown to have zero energy states contained in conjugate spaces of Gel'fand triplets. For the zero energy eigenvalue the equations for all $a$ are reduced to the same equat…

Rearrangements and Dilatancy for Sheared Dense Materials

Anaël Lemaître2001-08-27arXiv

Constitutive equations are proposed for dense materials, based on the identification of two types of free-volume activated rearrangements associated to shear and compaction. Two situations are studied: the case of an amorphous solid in a stress-strain test, and the case of a lubricant in tribology test. Varying parame…

Far infrared absorption in triangular and square quantum dots: characterization of corner and side modes

Manuel Valín-Rodríguez、Antonio Puente、Llorenç Serra2001-08-27arXiv

The far-infrared absorption of triangular and square two-dimensional quantum dots is studied by means of time simulations of the density oscillations within the time-dependent local-spin-density approximation. The absorption is spatially analyzed using a local-response theory that allows the identification of {\em cor…

Hartree-Fock dynamics in highly excited quantum dots

Antonio Puente、Llorenç Serra、Vidar Gudmundsson2001-08-27arXiv

Time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory is used to describe density oscillations of symmetry-unrestricted two-dimensional nanostructures. In the small amplitude limit the results reproduce those obtained within a perturbative approach such as the linearized time-dependent Hartree-Fock one. The nonlinear regime is explored…

Low-Temperature Long-Time Simulations of Ising Ferromagnets using the Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains method

M. A. Novotny2001-08-27arXiv

The Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains (MCAMC) method is introduced. This method is a generalization of the rejection-free method known as the $n$-fold way. The MCAMC algorithm is applied to the study of the very low-temperature properties of the lifetime of the metastable state of Ising ferromagnets. This is do…

A microscopical model of interatomic deformational interactions is suggeste…

For many spin systems with constant isotropic antiferromagnetic next-neighbour Heisenberg coupling the minimal energies E_{min}(S) form a rotational band, i.e. depend approximately quadratically on the total spin quantum number S, a property which is also known as Lande interval rule. However, we find that for certain…

Effect of hydrogen on ground state structures of small silicon clusters

D. Balamurugan、R. Prasad2001-08-27arXiv

We present results for ground state structures of small Si$_{n}$H (2 \leq \emph{n} \leq 10) clusters using the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. In particular, we focus on how the addition of a hydrogen atom affects the ground state geometry, total energy and the first excited electronic level gap of an Si$_{n}$ clus…

Image-potential band-gap narrowing at a metal/semiconductor interface

Ryotaro Arita、Yoshiaki Tanida、Kazuhiko Kuroki 等 4 位作者2001-08-27arXiv

GW approximation is used to systematically revisit the image-potential band-gap narrowing at metal/semiconductor interfaces proposed by Inkson in the 1970's. Here we have questioned how the narrowing as calculated from quasi-particle energy spectra for the jellium/Si interface depends on $r_s$ of the jellium. The gap…
