Abstract Parts of a stainless steel limiter used in the T‐10 tokamak for about 1000 discharges have been analyzed by several standard analysis techniques as SEM, EDS, SAM, AES, RBS and SIMS with respect to modifications of surface structure and chemical composition. Erosion phenomena due to melting and evaporation, ar…

The equation of state for Lennard-Jones matter has been investigated by molecular dynamics. A crystal-liquid instability is encountered, on expansion, at a density which increases slightly with temperature. No similar liquid instability is found on compression, which instead ultimately leads to a glass transition.

The proportions of fibroin mRNA synthesized in the posterior silk gland of the flimsy cocoon mutant (flc) of Bombyx mori at days 3, 4 and 5 of the fifth instar were 1.2 %, 0.7 % and 1.8 % of the labeled total RNA, re-spectively, whereas those in heterozygous larva (+/flc) at the same stages were 1.6 %, 3.2 % and 8.5 %…

Enthalpies of proton dissociation δHa of poly(acrylic acid) at three different temperatures have been determined as a function of the degree of dissociation α. Despite the apparent increase in pKa with increasing α, the enthalpy of proton dissociation decreases with increasing α, reaching an almost constant value arou…

Developmental changes in the fine structure of the posterior silk gland cells were studied with a recessive mutant of Bombyx mori named flimsy cocoon (flc) whose cocoon-shell weight is much less than that of the normal strain of B. mori. The flc posterior silk gland develops normally until 60 h after the fourth ecdysi…

The synthesis of UN from UO2 through carbide by oxide-carbide-nitride process has been studied in an NH3 stream and a mixed H2 and N2 stream at temperatures 1,400-1,750° C. Uranium mononitride is produced from the carbide by the following four stages: (1) deposition of free carbon, (2) deposition and removal of free c…

Thick film conductors based on Al, Cu and Ni have been studied. Because of its high depth of field, a SEM was used to study the microstructures of the fired conductors. Because of the very small size of the particles in commercial Cu pastes the neck growth forms part of the grain growth mechanism. The bonding between…

The experimental literature on the phase equilibria of the Al-Fe-Ni system has been reviewed. Recommended projections of the solid-liquid equilibria are based upon a compromise between experimental data for the isothermal contours and established points for binary and ternary invariant reactions. The nature of the equ…

Electron spin resonance has been used for the study of the radical in gamma-irradiated single crystals of 5'-UMP (sodium salt). Six types of radicals have been identified at room temperature. They are formed by addition of H atoms to C5, C6, 02 and 04, and by an OH addition to C5 of the uracil ring. Five of these radi…

Abstract Single crystals of Sr 2 Ti 6 O 13 were prepared by heating a mixture of SrO·Ti 2 O 3 ·2TiO 2 in a vacuum furnace to 1800 °C for 6 hours. X-ray investigations show monoclinic symmetry (a = 1525,0, b = 376,9, c = 916,4 pm; β = 99,15°, space group C 3 2h -C2/m). Sr 2 Ti 6 O 13 is isotypic with Ba 2 Ti 6 O 13 .
