On the crystal structures and melting point alternation of the n-alkyl carboxylic acids

Andrew D. Bond2004-01-01New Journal of Chemistry

The crystal structures of the complete series of n-alkyl carboxylic acids from hexanoic to pentadecanoic acid have been determined following in situ crystallisation. The structures reveal that the melting point alternation across the series is correlated with alternating crystal density. All even acids crystallise fro…

On the fringing-field effect in liquid-crystal beam-steering devices

Boris Apter、U. Efron、Eldad Bahat-Treidel2004-01-01Applied Optics

A detailed simulation of the fringing-field effect in liquid-crystal (LC)-based blazed-grating structures has been carried out. These studies are aimed at clarifying the relationship between the width of the fringing-field-broadened phase profile of the blazed grating and the LC cell thickness. This fringing-field bro…

The online analysis of cadmium selenide nanoparticle formation in continuous-flow microfluidic reactors is described. The as-produced particles exhibit sharp excitonic absorption and emission peaks (∼30–40 nm) with relatively high quantum efficiencies (∼10%). The mean size and dispersity of the particles, determined u…

Novel Microcellular Ceramics from a Silicone Resin

Paolo Colombo、Enrico Bernardo、Lisa Biasetto2004-01-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Microcellular silicon oxycarbide open cell ceramic foams were fabricated from a silicone resin. Microcellular foams, with a cell size ranging from ∼1–80 μm, were fabricated using poly(methyl methacrylate) microbeads as sacrificial templates. The compression strength of the foams decreased with increasing cell size.

We have measured double-layer capacitance and electronic conductance of an activated carbon electrode in an aprotic electrolyte solution, 1 mol/L in acetonitrile. Both quantities show a similar dependence on the electrode potential with distinct minima near the potential of zero charge. This correlation suggests that…
