Magnetic alignment studies demonstrate that a fraction of acid purified single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) exhibit both linear-orbital (diamagnetic and/or paramagnetic) and ferromagnetic (FM) anisotropies. The latter are unexpected, as prior studies have assumed that remaining FM impurities are encapsulated and play…

A low‐temperature (≤700°C) magnesiothermic reaction has been used for the first time to convert three‐dimensional (3‐D) silica‐based diatom microshells into nanocrystalline magnesia‐based replicas. Exposure of diatom microshells to Mg( g ) at only 650°–700°C resulted in the initial (direct) formation of MgO and Si nan…

The capability to form robust SiC‐to‐SiC joints is needed to enable the fabrication of complex SiC‐based structures. In this work, molybdenum foils are used to develop a diffusion bond with SiC during a vacuum heat treatment at 1500°C for 10 h. The bond consists of a central region of Mo 2 C with Mo 5 Si 3 +carbon and…

The structural and physicochemical properties of the manganese-corrolazine (Cz) complexes (TBP8Cz)Mn(V)O (1) and (TBP8Cz)Mn(III) (2) (TBP = p-tert-butylphenyl) have been determined. Recrystallization of 2 from toluene/MeOH resulted in the crystal structure of (TBP8Cz)Mn(III)(CH3OH) (2 x MeOH). The packing diagram of 2…

Uniaxially aligned CoFe2O4 nanorods (see Figure) are obtained by coprecipitation of Co2+, Fe2+, and C2O42– ions in a microemulsion solution, and subsequent high-temperature decomposition of CoFe2(C2O4)3. Each nanorod is made up of a “tectonic” assembly of CoFe2O4 nanocrystals. Magnetization of such CoFe2O4 materials m…

For the first time, polarized-light-emitting quantum-rod diodes have been successfully produced, using thin layers of quantum rods oriented by a rubbing technique. Diode emission at 620 nm with a luminance efficiency of 0.65 Cd A–1 and an external quantum efficiency of 0.49 % is obtained (see Figure and inside cover).
