An experimental study was made of the parameters and mechanism of the quenching of the luminescence of rare-earth ions by hydroxyl groups. This was done for nine transitions. The permissible concentration of the OH groups were found for laser glasses intended for different applications.

KDy(MoO 4 ) 2 is known to undergo a structural phase transition at 14.3K. Spectroscopic and magnetic studies of the behaviour of this compound at low temperatures have revealed some striking properties which suggest that the phase transition is of the Jahn-Teller type and that ordering occurs in an antiferrodistortive…

A theory is formulated that explains the observed bond-length change in graphite intercalation compounds in terms of the charge transfer $f$. The values of $f$ obtained via the bond-length changes are in good agreement with those derived with other methods. The present analysis also provides information on the electro…

The 0.82 eV intracentre transition of Cr 2+ ( 5 T 2 to 5 E) in GaAs is observed as a very sharp peak in the low-temperature photoconductivity response. The dependence of the photoconductivity on temperature and electric field is discussed and a comparison is made with the corresponding line in absorption. The results…

The magnetic structure of Ni 0.92 Zn 0.08 Br 2 has been studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction as a function of temperature down to 4.2K and in magnetic fields along (110) up to 3 T. From T N =48.0+or-0.5K to T IC =21.0+or-0.5K the magnetic structure is a collinear easy-plane metamagnetic one like NiCl 2 . Belo…

Cladded-type fluoride glass fibres with a transmission loss of 0.1 dB/m at 2.5 μm and 0.3 dB/m at 3.6 μm, respectively, were fabricated by a novel casting method. Relative refractive-index differences between core and cladding ranging from 0.17% to 0.33% were obtained using BaF2-GdF3-ZrF4-AlF3 glasses as core and clad…

The solution of the Ornstein-Zernike equation for a direct correlation function c(x) with damped oscillations and a hard core condition imposed upon the total correlation function h(x) has been proposed by Cummings as a means of treating a simple model potential for liquid metals in the mean spherical approximation [1…

Theory is presented which describes the competitive interaction of a multivalent solute with a univalent ligand and an affinity matrix. The formulation accounts for cross-linking interactions of the multivalent solute, and of its complexes with ligand, with matrix interaction sites in terms of two site-binding constan…

A general procedure which selectively introduced a nucleophilic group at a particular location in the active site of lysozyme has been developed. The coupling of hen egg white lysozyme with amine nucleophiles by 1-ethyl-3-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) was studied at pH 5 and room temperatur…

Faulted structures in the FeCr σ-phase are observed in lattice images by the use of a high resolution transmission electron microscope and local atomic arrangements near the faults are deduced from the images. The faults can be divided into two classes from a structural point of view. A fault lying in the (110) plane…
