Room-temperature tunable microwave properties of strained SrTiO3 films

Wontae Chang、S. W. Kirchoefer、J.M. Pond 等 7 位作者2004-11-22Journal of Applied Physics

Structural distortion of ferroelectric thin films caused by film strain has a strong impact on the microwave dielectric properties. SrTiO3 thin films epitaxially grown on (110)DyScO3 substrates using molecular beam epitaxy are extremely strained (i.e., ∼1% in-plane tensional strain) from 3.905Å of bulk SrTiO3. The roo…

Effects of Nanophase Materials (≤20 nm) on Biological Responses

Meng‐Dawn Cheng2004-11-22Journal of Environmental Science and Health Part A

Nanophase materials have enhanced properties (thermal, mechanical, electrical, surface reactivity, etc.) not found in bulk materials. Intuitively, the enhancement of material properties could occur when the materials encounter biological specimens. Previous investigations of biological interactions with nanometer-scal…

Thickness dependence of structural relaxation in spin-cast, glassy polymer thin films

Hugh H. Richardson、Ignacio López‐García、Michele Sferrazza 等 4 位作者2004-11-22Physical Review E

The isothermal structural relaxation of glassy, spin-cast polymer thin films has been investigated. Specifically, the thickness h of freshly cast poly(methyl methacrylate) thin films was measured over time using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The spin-cast films exhibit a gradual decrease in thickness, which is attribute…

J. O. Orwa、I. Andrienko、J. L. Peng 等 6 位作者2004-11-22Journal of Applied Physics

Tetrahedral amorphous carbon films with 70%–88% sp3 content are studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy as a function of annealing temperature in the range 25–1100°C. Using a high-resolution AFM current imaging, we directly image the formation and growth…

Self-consistency of Vuks equations for liquid-crystal refractive indices

Jun Li、Shin‐Tson Wu2004-11-22Journal of Applied Physics

Vuks equations correlate the microscopic molecular polarizabilities to the macroscopic refractive indices of anisotropic crystalline materials. For anisotropic liquid crystals, the molecular polarizabilities are difficult to measure directly due to the short- and long-range interactions. We have converted Vuks equatio…

Cristian Savaniu、Jesús Canales‐Vázquez、John T. S. Irvine2004-11-22Journal of Materials Chemistry

Barium zirconate shows better chemical and mechanical stability than the corresponding cerate, but lower protonic conductivity largely due to resistive grain boundary contributions.
