Abstract This paper provides an insight on the relationship between the physical properties of profiles extruded from flexible PVC compounds and the extrusion melt temperature. The properties include tear resistance, tensile properties, brittleness temperature, and compression set. The effect of heat history on surfac…
Four new 5alpha-steroidal glycosides with an unusual framework, funingenosides A (1), B (2), C (3), and D (4), were isolated from the roots of Parepigynum funingense. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR techniques. The structure and relative stereochemistry of compound 1 were demonstrated by…
One-dimensional ZnO nanodot arrays have been realized by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on SiO 2 substrates patterned by focused ion beam (FIB). Especially for the lines with the depth of 5 nm and the length of 0.7, 1.3 or 1.7 µm, one, two or three nanodots, respectively, of fairly uniform size 6-nm height and…
The new compound Ni(8)Bi(8)SI(2) has been synthesized and its crystal structure determined by X-ray crystallography. The structure contains one-dimensional (1D) cations (1)( infinity )[Ni(8)Bi(8)S](2+) separated by iodine anions. The geometry of the columns is similar to that of the recently reported (1)( infinity )[N…
CF4 and CO2 plasma treatments have been used to modify the barrier properties of a polyamide 12 (PA12) towards permeant molecules, which present opposing characteristics: water and toluene. The surface modifications were observed by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and surface Gibbs function m…
This paper considers the effect of anode heating from energetic electrons produced by field emission. Large electric fields accelerate emitted electrons as they traverse the vacuum gap toward the anode. Electron energy is transferred to the anode by collisions with the lattice. The nonequilibrium transfer of electron…
Abstract In this paper the blending of polyamides nylon 6 and nylon 12, with a perfectly alternating ethylene/CO copolymer containing 50 mol‐% carbonyl groups (polyketone) is investigated in comparison to blends of the same polyamides with polyolefins containing varying degrees of carbonyl group incorporation. These i…
Suspended gold nanoparticles have been synthesized via electrochemical method. The strongest resonance scattering peak is at 485 nm, which results from the surface plasmon resonance. When the excited wavelength is at 242 nm (12.4 × 10 14 Hz), there have been a 1/2 fraction frequency scattering peak at 485 nm (1/2 × 12…
Abstract Polyolefin elastomers with varying 1‐octene content and different thermal history are studied by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) during drawing and after relaxation. The multidimensional chord distribution function (CDF) reveals the nanostructure made from crystallit…
Abstract The miscibility and the effect of compositional distribution on physical properties were investigated for binary blends of biosynthesized poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] and comonomer compositionally fractionated poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐ co ‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate)s [P(3HB‐ co ‐3HH)] with narrow compositional dis…
This document, the ''THERM 5/WINDOW 5 NFRC Simulation Manual', discusses how to use the THERM and WINDOW programs to model products for NFRC certified simulations and assumes that the user is already familiar with those programs. In order to learn how to use these programs, it is necessary to become familiar with the…
Abstract Sisal fibers and finely powdered high‐density polyethylene were surface functionalized with dichlorosilane on a RF(radio frequency)‐plasma reactor. Composites made from sisal and high‐density polyethylene were compounded using a thermokinetic mixer. The discharged mass was cooled, granulated, and injected mol…
Very low molecular weight polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been synthesized and characterized by using Infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry. Molecular weight distribution of PDMS has been determined by using multiple angle light s…
Abstract Pinking of TiO 2 ‐pigmented PVC can be observed for profiles exposed to the mild environmental conditions of northern European countries. In a previous paper, the pinking phenomenon was accounted for at the molecular level by the formation of polyene sequences, which are not completely photooxidatively bleach…
The feasibility of constructing a tissue-engineered heart valve on an acellular porcine aortic valve leaflet was evaluated. A detergent and enzymatic extraction process was developed to remove the cellular components from porcine aortic valves. The acellular valve leaflets were seeded for 7 days in vitro with cells fr…
Subsolidus phase equilibria in the system Fe 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –TiO 2 were investigated between 1000° and 1300°C. Quenched samples were examined using powder X‐ray diffraction and electron probe microanalytical methods. The main features of the phase relations were: (a) the presence of an M 3 O 5 solid solution series b…
Abstract Raman spectroscopy was applied to investigate changes in the hydration state of chemically modified porcine pericardium tissue. Chemically modified tissues are used in construction of bioprostheses for replacement surgery including dermis, heart valves and blood vessels. The hydration state is a very importan…
Abstract In this paper we dealt with the problem of wetting and ascending of a liquid along a fiber bundle. Two issues are first addressed including the criterion for complete wetting of the fiber bundle and the ascension liquid profile on a partially dipped vertical fiber bundle. Both topics are studied theoretically…
