Electromechanical Properties of Multi-Domain Ferroelectrics

Rajeev Ahluwalia、Turab Lookman、Avadh Saxena 等 4 位作者2003-08-12arXiv

We study theoretically the influence of the underlying domain microstructure on the electromechanical properties of ferroelectrics. Our calculations are based on a continuum approach that incorporates the long-range elastic and electrostatic interactions. The theory is used to simulate the piezoelectric properties of…

Imaging of the [Mn2+(3d5) + hole] complex in GaAs by Cross-sectional Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

A. M. Yakunin、A. Yu. Silov、P. M. Koenraad 等 6 位作者2003-08-12arXiv

We present results on the direct spatial mapping of the wave-function of a hole bound to a Mn acceptor in GaAs. To investigate individual Mn dopants at the atomic scale in both ionized and neutral configurations, we used a room temperature cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscope (X-STM). We found that in the neu…

Empirical scaling of the dielectric permittivity peak in relaxor ferroelectrics

Alexei A. Bokov、Yonghong Bing、W. Chen 等 8 位作者2003-08-12Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Dielectric permittivity \ensuremath{\varepsilon} as a function of temperature is measured in ${\mathrm{PbMg}}_{1/3}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{2/3}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ and a number of other relaxor ferroelectrics with the perovskite structure. It is found that the data taken from the high-temperature slopes of the diffused permittivi…

P. Campestrini、Herman Terryn、A. Hovestad 等 4 位作者2003-08-12Surface and Coatings Technology

The chemical conversion treatment for aluminium alloys based on the immersion in cerium chloride/hydrogen peroxide solutions is one of the possible alternatives to the chromate conversion process for the corrosion protection of aluminium alloys. The nucleation and growth of the cerium-based conversion coating on AA202…

Adsorption and Dissociation of O2 on Gold Surfaces: Effect of Steps and Strain

Ye Xu、Manos Mavrikakis2003-08-12OpenAlex

The activation of dioxygen via dissociation on strained and stepped gold surfaces has been studied using periodic self-consistent (GGA-PW91) density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Although we find that molecular oxygen does not adsorb on Au(111), it does bind, albeit weakly, to an Au(111) surface stretched by 1…

Deriving effective mesoscale potentials from atomistic simulations

Dirk Reith、Mathias Pütz、Florian Müller‐Plathe2003-08-12OpenAlex

We demonstrate how an iterative method for potential inversion from distribution functions developed for simple liquid systems can be generalized to polymer systems. It uses the differences in the potentials of mean force between the distribution functions generated from a guessed potential and the true distribution f…

On the annealing of junction disclinations in deformed polycrystals

Д.В. Бачурин、А. А. Назаров2003-08-11The Philosophical Magazine A Journal of Theoretical Experimental and Applied Physics

The kinetics of relaxation of disclination quadrupoles formed within triple junctions of grains during plastic deformation are studied. The calculations are made using the discrete dislocation model for disclinations by simulating the climb of dislocations. Exponential relationships are obtained for the relaxation of…

Low-energy vibrational excitations in carbon nanotubes studied by heat capacity

J.C. Lasjaunias、K. Biljaković、P. Monceau 等 4 位作者2003-08-11Nanotechnology

We present low-temperature heat capacity measurements performed on two different kinds of single-walled carbon nanotube bundles which essentially differ in their mean number of tubes ( N T ) per bundle. For temperatures below a few kelvin, the vibrational heat capacity can be analysed as the sum of two contributions.…

Collective Character of Spin Excitations in a System ofMn2+Spins Coupled to a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

F. J. Terán、M. Potemski、D. K. Maude 等 10 位作者2003-08-11Physical Review Letters

We have studied the low energy spin excitations in n-type CdMnTe based dilute magnetic semiconductor quantum wells. For magnetic fields for which the energies for the excitation of free carriers and Mn spins are almost identical, an anomalously large Knight shift is observed. Our findings suggest the existence of a ma…

Probabilistic scoring measures for profile–profilecomparison yield more accurate short seed alignments

David Mittelman、Ruslan I. Sadreyev、Nick V. Grishin2003-08-11Bioinformatics

MOTIVATION: The development of powerful automatic methods for the comparison of protein sequences has become increasingly important. Profile-to-profile comparisons allow for the use of broader information about protein families, resulting in more sensitive and accurate comparisons of distantly related sequences. A key…

Diffraction efficiency of a holographic grating in a liquid-crystal cell composed of asymmetrically patterned electrodes

Wei Lee、Hsu-Chih Chen2003-08-11Nanotechnology

The diffraction efficiency as a function of the externally applied voltage exhibits an unusual trend for a holographic grating written in a nanotube-doped liquid-crystal cell composed of two glass substrates with asymmetric patterns of filmy transparent indium–tin oxide. Experimental evidence suggests that output ener…
