Wei‐Qiang Han、John Cumings、Alex Zettl2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

A pyrolysis route has been used to synthesize arrays of highly aligned BxCyNz nanotubes in bulk. The structure and composition of the product were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The length and diameter of the nanot…

Exciton–erbium coupling and the excitation dynamics of Er3+ in erbium-doped silicon-rich silicon oxide

Se-Young Seo、Jung H. Shin2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

The exciton–erbium coupling and the excitation dynamics of Er3+ in erbium-doped silicon-rich silicon oxide are investigated using time-resolved measurements of Er3+ luminescence. The dependence of the Er3+ luminescence on the pump power and duration indicates that the exciton–erbium coupling is dominant over carrier–e…

Switching dynamics of suspended mesogenic polymer microspheres

Darran R. Cairns、Merwin Sibulkin、Gregory P. Crawford2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

Ordered polymer microspheres were produced by photo-polymerizing reactive nematic liquid crystal droplets suspended in glycerol, thus capturing the mesogenic order indefinitely. The electro-optic switching of these structures suspended in a fluid is investigated and described by a simple phenomenological model.

Depth profiling of ZnO thin films by cathodoluminescence

H. C. Ong、A. S. K. Li、Guo Du2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

The depth-resolved luminescence of the ZnO epilayer has been studied by using cathodoluminescence (CL) at room temperature. Other than the usual excitonic and deep level emissions, two peaks at 3.13 and 2.57 eV have been observed and are attributed to the defects. The variation of all the emission peaks has been exami…

THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS. II. POLY(ETHER-ESTER-IMIDE)S BASED ON 1,4-DIAMINOBUTANE, TRIMELLITIC ANHYDRIDE, 1,4-DIHYDROXYBUTANE, AND POLY(ETHYLENE OXIDE)S

Hans R. Kricheldorf、Thomas Wollheim、Volker Altstädt 等 5 位作者2001-04-30Journal of Macromolecular Science Part A

A series of new poly(ether-ester-imide)s, PEEIs, was prepared from an imide dicarboxylic acid based on 1,4-diaminobutane and trimellitic anhydride. This imide dicarboxylic acid polycondensed with 1,4-dihydroxybutane formed the hard segments and poly(ethylene oxide), PEO-1000, or mixtures of PEO-1000 and poly(tetrameth…

Structure and formation mechanism of the Eα′ center in amorphous SiO2

Takashi Uchino、Makoto Takahashi、Toshinobu Yoko2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

We provide a possible formation mechanism for one of the Si-related paramagnetic centers in amorphous silica, Eα′, which is stable only below 200 K, on the basis of the quantum-chemical calculations. We show that the divalent Si defect can trap a hole, resulting in two different types of paramagnetic centers that are…

Mohd Zobir Hussein、Zulkarnain Zainal、Ismail Yaziz 等 4 位作者2001-04-30Journal of Environmental Science and Health Part A

Layered double hydroxide of Mg-Al-carbonate system (MACH) was prepared and its heat-treated product (MACHT) was obtained by calcination at 500 degrees C. The resulting materials were used as an adsorbent for removal of color from synthetic textile wastewater (STW) and textile wastewater (TWW). Batch kinetic study show…

SUBSOIL POTASSIUM AVAILABILITY IN TWENTY-TWO BENCHMARK SOIL SERIES OF INDIA

Ch. Srinivasa Rao、T. R. Rupa、A. Subba Rao 等 4 位作者2001-04-30Communications in Soil Science and Plant Analysis

Potassium (K) is an essential plant nutrient. The K present in subsoil, either from leaching of the applied K or from genetic origin, would be available to plants in substantial amounts. A great majority of studies on K in soils have been solely concerned with samples collected from the surface soils (0–15 cm). The de…

A mass spectrometric study of Al 2 O 3 ‐SiO 2 melts using a Knudsen cell

J. Björkvall、V. L. Stolyarova2001-04-30Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry

The thermodynamic activities of SiO(2) in Al(2)O(3)-SiO(2) liquid slags were measured by the high-temperature Knudsen cell mass spectromeric method in the present work. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range 1863-2169 K. Tungsten crucibles were used to hold the slags. The system was calibrated usin…

Charge dynamics in silicon nitride/silicon oxide double layers

Xiaoqing Zhang、G. M. Sessler2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

Transport of positive charge deposited by a corona discharge on the open nitride surface of a silicon nitride (150 nm)/silicon oxide (300 nm) double layer on silicon substrate is studied by determining the location of the charge centroid with a capacitance–voltage method used in conjunction with surface-potential meas…

Charge Dynamics of 2H-TaSe2along the Less-Conductingc-Axis

Barbara Ruzicka、L. Degiorgi、H. Berger 等 5 位作者2001-04-30Physical Review Letters

We present an optical study of 2H-TaSe2 along the less conducting c-axis. This dichalcogenide compound belongs to a large class of conductors called "bad metals" (with a mean free path smaller than the lattice constant along the c-axis), which also includes the superconducting cuprates. The optical response shows the…

Direct observation of a critical length effect in dual-damascene Cu/oxide interconnects

Electromigration results have provided clear evidence of a short or “Blech” length effect in dual- damascene, Cu/oxide, multilinked interconnects. The test structure incorporates a repeated chain of Blech-type line elements and is amenable to failure analysis tools such as focused ion beam imaging. This large intercon…

Evidence of quantum size effect in nanocrystalline silicon by optical absorption

Takahiro Matsumoto、Jun‐ichi Suzuki、Masato Ohnuma 等 5 位作者2001-04-30Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The optical absorption spectrum in nanocrystalline silicon $(n\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Si})$ was determined from both light transmittance and reflectance measurements. We observed that $n\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Si}$ has a phonon structure in the optical absorption spectrum. This structure originates from momentum-conservin…

B.G. Demczyk、John Cumings、Alex Zettl 等 4 位作者2001-04-30Applied Physics Letters

We have used high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to resolve the [0001] projected basal plane structure and chirality relationships in boron nitride nanotubes. Evidence for tube growth along both 〈101̄0〉 and 〈112̄0〉 is found. Our results suggest that the 〈112̄0〉 (armchair) tubes form first. Subsequent grow…

Self-interstitial aggregation in diamond

J. P. Goss、B.J. Coomer、R. Jones 等 7 位作者2001-04-30Physical review. B, Condensed matter

First-principles methods are used to investigate the self-interstitial and its aggregates in diamond. The experimental assignment of the spin-1 $R2$ EPR center to the single interstitial has been questioned because of the small fine-structure term observed. We calculate the spin-spin interaction tensor for the three i…
