Field-induced structure transformation in electrorheological solids

C. K. Lo、K. W. Yu2001-05-30arXiv

We have computed the local electric field in a body-centered tetragonal (BCT) lattice of point dipoles via the Ewald-Kornfeld formulation, in an attempt to examine the effects of a structure transformation on the local field strength. For the ground state of an electrorheological solid of hard spheres, we identified a…

Measurement of water vapor transmission rate in highly permeable films

Yanfeng Hu、V. A. Topolkaraev、A. Hiltner 等 4 位作者2001-05-30Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Measurements of water vapor transmission rate ( WVTR ) are often based on the wet cup method described by ASTM E 96‐95. In attempting to compare the performance of thin polymer films with moderate to high water vapor permeability, it was observed experimentally that the ASTM method did not give reliable resul…

Transverse Instability of Solitons Propagating on Current-Carrying Metal Thin Films

R. Mark Bradley2001-05-30arXiv

Small amplitude, long waves travelling over the surface of a current-carrying metal thin film are studied. The equation of motion for the metal surface is determined in the limit of high applied currents, when surface electromigration is the predominant cause of adatom motion. If the surface height h is independent of…

MgB2 superconducting thin films with a transition temperature of 39 Kelvin

W. N. Kang、Hyeong-Jin Kim、Eun-Mi Choi 等 5 位作者2001-05-30arXiv

We report the growth of high-quality c-axis-oriented epitaxial MgB2 thin films by using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The thin films grown on (1`1 0 2) Al2O3 substrates show a Tc of 39 K. The critical current density in zero field is ~ 6 x 10^6 A/cm2 at 5 K and ~ 3 x 10^5 A/cm^2 at 35 K, suggesting that this co…

Phonon propagation in nonpolar semiconductor heterostructures

Fernando de León‐Pérez、R. Pérez‐Álvarez2001-05-29Physical review. B, Condensed matter

A recently developed long-wavelength continuum phenomenological model is employed to study phonon tunneling for an arbitrary incidence angle, and to estimate the contribution of optical phonons to the perpendicular thermal conductivity in simple and multisuperlattice nonpolar semiconductor heterostructures. Phonon tun…

Molecular motion in nanocomposites of poly(ethylene oxide) and montmorillonite

Johann Kwiatkowski、Andrew K. Whittaker2001-05-29Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract Motion of chains of poly(ethylene oxide) within the interlayer spacing of 2:1 phyllosilicate/montmorillonite was studied with 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Measurements of the 1 H NMR line widths and relaxation times across a large temperature range were used to determine the effect of bulk thermal transitio…

Effect of crosslinking on the photoinduced orientation of azo groups in thin polymer films

Hideaki Takase、Almeria Natansohn、P. Rochon2001-05-29Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract A series of amorphous copolymers containing disperse red 1 and crosslinkable acrylic groups were prepared. The crosslinked polymers were prepared in thin films by thermal polymerization of the acrylic groups in the copolymers. The orientation induced by irradiation with a linearly polarized laser was measured…

Ulrich Wodara、Werner Schreyer2001-05-29European Journal of Mineralogy

As a missing link of the tourmaline classification, an X-site vacant analogue of olenite was synthesized from three different starting compositions in the system Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2-H2O (ABSH) over the PT-range 4–40 kbar, 450–700 °C, however never as a single phase product; dumortierite with either quartz or with jeremeje…

Surface-passivation-induced optical changes in Ge quantum dots

Fernando A. Reboredo、Alex Zunger2001-05-29Physical review. B, Condensed matter

One of the most interesting properties of quantum dots is the possibility to tune the band gap as a function of their size. Here we explore the possibility of changing the lifetime of the lowest-energy excited state by altering the surface passivation. We show that a moderately electronegative passivation potential ca…
