The decomposition of benzene was carried out using a plasma reactor packed with a mixture of BaTiO/sub 3/ and zeolite pellets, the zeolite-hybrid reactor. The reactor performance was characterized by measuring CO/sub x/ formed during plasma discharge and CO/sub x/ adsorbed on the solid surface, The decomposition effic…

Electrodes made by depositing ruthenium oxide on conducting poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDT) were studied for their electrochemical and impedance properties. In acidic electrolytes the composite electrodes exhibited large capacitance due to contributions from the double-layer capacitance and the faradaic capaci…

Bidimensional hexagonal or centred-rectangular mesoporous zirconia thin films have been reproducibly prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA), which are stable up to 300 degrees C, with pore size around 35 A; the films can be post-functionalised with organic ligands presenting different functions, opening…

Successive reactions of gaseous trimethylaluminium (TMA) and ammonia on porous alumina were studied with the goal of finding suitable process conditions for preparing aluminium nitride (AlN) by atomic layer deposition (ALD), a technique based on separate saturating gas–solid reactions. The reaction of TMA was studied…

The aliphatic polyesters with high molecular weight have been prepared according to two methods. First is the synthesis of the polyesters by polycondensation of dimethyl succinate (DMS) with 1,4-butanediol (BD) using various metal alkoxides as a catalyst. Among the metal alkoxides used, titanium tetraisopropoxide [Ti(…

Silicon dioxide glass rods of micrometer sizes were synthesized by using surfactant–carbon nanotube co-micelles as templates. These glass rods were used as additives to reinforce inorganic ceramics. The mechanical strength of the silicon dioxide ceramic is enhanced by ∼100% in the presence of ∼6 wt% of CNTs.

A simple and predictive model is put forward explaining the experimentally observed substantial shift of the glass transition temperature, T g, of sufficiently thin polymer films. It focuses on the limit of small molecular weight, where geometrical `finite size' effects on the chain conformation can be ruled out. The…

Collagen matrices, crosslinked using N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide (E) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (N), were previously developed as a substrate for endothelial cell seeding of small-diameter vascular grafts. In the present study, the biocompatibility of various EN-crosslinked collagen matrices was evalu…

Atomistic computer simulation methods have been employed to model the structure of the (104) surfaces of calcite (CaCO3), dolomite [CaMg(CO3)2] and magnesite (MgCO3). Our calculations show that, under anhydrous vacuum conditions, calcite undergoes the greatest degree of surface relaxation with rotation and distortion…

We study heat conduction in one-dimensional mass-disordered harmonic and anharmonic lattices. It is found that the thermal conductivity kappa of the disordered anharmonic lattice is finite at low temperature, whereas it diverges as kappa approximately N0.43 at high temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that a unique n…
