The evolution of implanted 2H profiles in single-crystal ZnO was examined as a function of annealing temperature (500–700 °C) by secondary ion mass spectrometry. The as-implanted profiles show a peak concentration of ∼2.7×1019 cm−3 at a depth of ∼0.96 μm for a dose of 1015 cm−2. Subsequent annealing causes outdiffusio…

The composition dependence of magnetic and structural transformations, as well as the temperature and composition dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, were studied in the martensitic Ni2+xMn1+yGa1+z (x+y+z=0) Heusler alloys. The dielectric behavior of the high-energy electron irradiated poly(vinylidene fluoride–trifluoroethylene) 68/32 mol % copolymer was characterized in the dose range from 0 to 175 Mrad. It was found that as the dose increases, the copolymer evolves from a normal ferroelectric to a relaxor ferroelectric and then to a si…

Thin films of the semiconducting, monoclinic vanadium dioxide, VO2(M) have been prepared on ordinary glass by two methods: directly by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and by argon-annealing films of the VO2(B) phase deposited by MOCVD. The composition and microstructure of the films have b…

We have carried out first-principles density functional calculations for clusters of the coinage metals containing thirteen atoms (M13, where M=Cu, Ag, or Au). We find that for this geometric “magic number” the low energy isomers are actually disordered, forming almost a continuous distribution as a function of energy.

A single-crystalline ferromagnetic Ni-Mn-Ga shape memory specimen was deformed in the martensitic state by uniaxial compression to a total strain of 2%. The stress-strain curve displays a yield point at 6 MPa followed by jerky flow. After mechanical deformation, magnetomechanical tests in a rotating magnetic field of…

Zinc oxide nanocrystallites down to 1.5 nm in diameter were made by spray combustion of Zn/Si precursors. These crystallites exhibit a quantum size effect: blueshift of light absorption with decreasing crystallite size. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption showed…

A tris(3-pyridyl)-substituted C3 symmetric subphthalocyanine (SubPc) was dimerized into a M3L2 cage in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of (en)Pd(NO3)2. NMR studies demonstrated the recognition event to be accompanied by chiral self-discrimination between the two enantiomers of the SubPc. Moreover, the specific…

We analize electrical conductivity controlled by hopping of bound spin polarons in disordered solids with wide distributions of electron energies and polaron shifts (barriers). By means of percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulations we have shown that in such materials at low temperatures, when hopping occurs in th…
