High-Pressure Syntheses of Novel Binary Nitrogen Compounds of Main Group Elements

Edwin Kroke2002-01-02Angewandte Chemie International Edition

The application of high-pressure methods in the search for novel materials usually requires additional effort compared to syntheses at ambient pressure. Depending on the desired p/T conditions different methods may be used. Special techniques and experimental apparatus such as shock waves, diamond anvil cells, and mul…

An Unprecedented Mixed-Charged State in a Supramolecular Assembly of Ligand-Based Mixed-Valence Redox Isomers (ET.+)3[CrIII(Cl4SQ)2(Cl4Cat)]−[CrIII(Cl4SQ)(Cl4Cat)2]2−

Ho‐Chol Chang、Susumu Kitagawa2002-01-02Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Coexistence of two kinds of ligand-based mixed-valence (LBMV) isomers is observed for the first time in the title compound (see scheme). Together with its mixed-charged state, the compound shows semiconducting behavior with an intermolecular ferromagnetic interaction, which is attributable to the association of five p…

Electronic properties of K-doped single-wall carbon nanotube bundles

Chulsu Jo、Changwook Kim、Young Hee Lee2002-01-02Physical review. B, Condensed matter

We have investigated electronic properties of K-doped single-wall carbon nanotube bundles by the first principles calculations. The lattice expands up to 8% at ${\mathrm{K}}_{0.1}\mathrm{C}$ with negative binding energies, where distortion of tube walls is negligible up to ${\mathrm{K}}_{0.25}\mathrm{C}$ with full rel…

Configuration Space Connectivity across the Fragile-to-Strong Transition in Silica

Emilia La Nave、H. Eugene Stanley、Francesco Sciortino2002-01-02Physical Review Letters

We present a numerical analysis for SiO (2) of the fraction of diffusive direction f(diff) for temperatures T on both sides of the fragile-to-strong crossover. The T dependence of f(diff) clearly reveals this change in dynamical behavior. We find that for T above the crossover (fragile region) the system is always clo…

Ordered Langmuir-Blodgett Films of Amphiphilic β-Hairpin Peptides Imaged by Atomic Force Microscopy

Evan T. Powers、Sung Ik Yang、Charles M. Lieber 等 4 位作者2002-01-02Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Peptide length affects the size of the ridges observed in the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the Langmuir–Blodgett films of amphiphilic peptides: Well-ordered LB films can be prepared from a 14-residue amphiphilic peptide (left), while ordered LB films with a wider lattice (right) are obtained from an 18-resi…

Topological defects and dislocations in strongly anisotropic crystals consisting of parallel molecular chains are investigated. Our study is focused on the defects in crystalline polyethelyne, which are formed by transverse displacements of chain molecules (mutual substitutions and interlacings of adjacent molecular c…

Suppressing Dissociation in Sonoluminescing Bubbles: The Effect of Excluded Volume

Ruediger Toegel、Sascha Hilgenfeldt、Detlef Lohse2002-01-02Physical Review Letters

Recent theoretical work in single-bubble sonoluminescence has suggested that water vapor in the collapsing bubble leads to energy-consuming chemical reactions, restricting the peak temperatures to values for which hardly any light emission could occur. Analyzing the reaction thermodynamics within the dense, collapsed…

Three‐Dimensional Organically Templated Open‐Framework Transition Metal Selenites

Amitava Choudhury、Udaya Kumar D、C. N. R. Rao2002-01-02Angewandte Chemie International Edition

One dimensional channels are formed in the three-dimensional open-framework iron selenite [C4N2H12]0.5[Fe2F3(SeO3)2] (I), which was synthesized hydrothermally from FeCl3⋅6 H2O, HF, and SeO2 in the presence of the organic amine piperazine. The same inorganic framework was also obtained with the amines diethylenetetrami…

Incoherent Neutron Scattering and the Dynamics of Confined Polycarbonate Films

Christopher L. Soles、Jack F. Douglas、Wen‐Li Wu 等 4 位作者2002-01-02Physical Review Letters

Incoherent elastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on thin (75 to 1015 A) polycarbonate films supported on Si wafers. We find that the mean-square atomic displacement <u(2)> is diminished by thin film confinement. For film thicknesses comparable to the unperturbed dimensions of the macromolecule, we obse…

Lateral versus Perpendicular Segregation in Mixed Polymer Brushes

Sergiy Minko、Marcus Müller、Denys Usov 等 6 位作者2002-01-02Physical Review Letters

Grafting of incompatible polymers on a substrate prevents macrophase separation and the chains self-assemble laterally. Mixed brushes are exposed to different solvents and the morphology is observed via atomic force and x-ray photoemission microscopy. In a nonselective solvent the different species segregate into para…

Mikhail Popov、Mutsumasa Kyotani、R. J. Nemanich 等 4 位作者2002-01-02Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT's) have been studied under pressure up to 55 GPa. We report experimental data on irreversible changes of mechanical and structure properties of SWNT under pressure. The new superhard phase (SP-SWNT) composed of single-wall carbon nanotubes has been studied which exhibits a bulk modul…

Erodible Conducting Polymers for Potential Biomedical Applications

Alexander N. Zelikin、David M. Lynn、Jian Farhadi 等 6 位作者2002-01-02Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Conducting films and pellets formed from β-substituted polypyrroles (see picture; R=H, CH3) erode under aqueous conditions in a pH-dependent manner, which allows erosion rates to be tailored through differences in polymer side-chain structure. These conducting materials support the attachment, proliferation, and diffe…

Kinetic exchange vs. room temperature ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors

J. Blinowski、P. Kacman、T. Dietl2002-01-02arXiv

Guided by the internal-reference rule and the known band offsets in III-V and II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductors, we discuss the feasibility of obtaining p-type conductivity, required for the carrier-induced ferromagnetism, as well as the cases for which the doping by shallow impurities may lead to the ferromagneti…

Takashi Wakasugi、Atsushi Kotani、Teppei KATSUMATA 等 5 位作者2002-01-01Journal of the Society of Materials Science Japan

Ag2O-B2O3-Al2O3 glasses were prepared by melting and quenching method and the state of silver in the glasses was examined by optical absorption spectra. These glasses have two absorption peaks at less than 300nm and 320nm, which correspond to Ag+ ion and atomic Ag, respectively. The content of atomic silver increased…
