シルセスキオキサンは,シリコーンとシリカの中間的な存在として位置づけられ,有機と無機の特長を併せもつ。本稿では,有機ユニットとして架橋性基を導入したシルセスキオキサン誘導体「SQシリーズ」の硬化物の耐熱性を評価した。SQシリーズの分子設計を工夫することで,耐熱衝撃や耐黄変に優れる構造を見いだした。これらの知見を活かして,宇宙機用の耐原子状酸素性コーティングへの適用を検討したところ,既存のコーティングの欠点を克服した画期的なコーティング剤を開発できた。SQシリーズを塗布した材料が宇宙で用いられ,実用化を果たした。
