Hot‐Pressing of β‐SiC Powder with Al‐B‐C Additives

Bor‐Wen Lin、Masamitsu Imai、Toyohiko Yano 等 4 位作者1986-04-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The sintering behavior of β‐SiC powders with additions of Al, B, and C was studied at 1600° to 1800°C with applied pressures of 20 to 60 MPa. Ceramics with densities of ∼3.08 g/cm 3 were obtained by hot‐pressing at 1650°C and 50 MPa. The bending strength did not degrade up to 1200°C. A large amount of a second phase,…

The Distribution of Electromigration Failures

Donald J. Lacombe、Earl L. Parks1986-04-01IEEE International Reliability Physics Symposium proceedings

This paper presents the results of an evaluation of the statistical distribution of electromigration test failures. Large scale life tests were carried out and the natujre of the failure distributions were determined for lines of varying length and width. In all cases, the distribution were found to be log-normal down…

Mechanical Properties of ZrC‐ZrB 2 and ZrC‐TiB 2 Directionally Solidified Eutectics

Charles C. Sorrell、V. S. STUBIČAN、Richard C. Bradt1986-04-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Lamellar ZrC‐ZrB 2 and Chinese‐script ZrC‐TiB 2 eutectics were directionally solidified using the floating‐zone method of crystal growth. The Knoop microhardness, fracture toughness, and wear resistance were investigated as a function of the phase spacing. Nearly all of the direction ally solidified specimens exhibite…

A Simple, Inexpensive Method for Cleaning Diatoms

Jennifer M. Carr、Gary L. Hergenrader、Nels H. Troelstrup1986-04-01Transactions of the American Microscopical Society

Diatom frustules are rapidly and inexpensively cleared of protoplasts using commercially available bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite). A comparison of periphyton subsamples cleaned by the bleach method described, and the standard nitric acid/potassium dichromate method, showed little difference in the extent to which…

Interactions Between Acidic Macromolecules and Structured Crystal Surfaces. Stereochemistry and Biomineralization

Lia Addadi、Steve Weiner1986-04-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

Some organisms are capable of exerting exquisite control ower the crystals they form. Key components in this process are unusually acidic proteins (aspartic acid-rich). In this study we use a series of calciun dicarboxylic acid salts to investigate in vitro how these proeins are capable of interacting specifically wit…

Physical and electrochemichromic properties of rf sputtered tungsten oxide films

Hirohiko Kaneko、S. Nishimoto、K. Miyake 等 4 位作者1986-04-01Journal of Applied Physics

The physical and electrochemical coloration characteristics of tungsten oxide films rf sputtered from a compressed powder WO3 target have been investigated. Oxide films with 3600–9800 Å thickness were deposited on substrates maintained at 200 °C at a total pressure of 0.5–8×10−2 Torr in Ar gas or an Ar-0.5-50% O2 gas…

Kinetics of phase separation in polymer blends for deep quenches

I. G. Voigt‐Martin、Karl‐Heinz Leister、R. C. Rosenau 等 4 位作者1986-04-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract Electro microscopy was used to study the phase separation kinetics of a polystyrene/polyvinylmethylether system subjected to a critical deep quench. The size of the phase‐separated domains was found to increase linearly with time, implying that hydrodynamic effects control the rate of growth of the domains in…

Pathways of Smectite Illitization

Craig M. Bethke、Norma Vergo、Stephen P. Altaner1986-04-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract Junction probability diagrams show variation in both composition and layer arrangement in mixed-layer clay minerals. These diagrams can represent short-range and long-range ordered, random, and segregated interstratifications. Mineralogical analyses of illite/smectite from shale cuttings, bentonites, and hydr…

A.J. Reuvers、F. W. Altena、C.A. Smolders1986-04-01Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract The demixing behavior on cooling of ternary systems of cellulose acetate/solvent/water has been examined for CA concentrations up to 40 wt% CA in several solvents. Cloud points have been measured as a function of cooling rate. The rapid process of liquid—liquid demixing can be discriminated from the slow proc…

Surface Reconstruction on a Clean Si(110) Surface Observed by RHEED

Youiti Yamamoto、Shozo Ino、Toshihiro Ichikawa1986-04-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

A “16-structure" was found from careful surface cleaning manners and RHEED observations to be only a superstructure appearing on a clean Si(110) surface. The present work also confirmed clearly that almost all surface structures reported previously were superstructures characteristic of Ni-contaminated Si(110) surface…
