Applications requirements for nonlinear-optical devices and the status of organic materials

The materials requirements for nonlinear-optical applications, including electro-optics, second-harmonic generation, and all-optical signal processing, are discussed. The status of organic materials is reviewed in light of these requirements, along with the needs for future research.
