化合物半導体と聞いて何を想像するだろう? バイオ研究者にとってはなかなかなじみのない言葉かもしれないが,おおよそ導体と絶縁体の中間的な物質のことを半導体と呼んでいる.近年の情報化社会を支えているスマートフォン,テレビ,車,洗濯機,エアコンなどの電子機器はもちろん,新幹線,ロケット,宇宙ステーションほとんどの電化製品のなかに半導体素子が存在している.このような半導体素子は無機物でできているため,細胞やタンパク質などとは全く関係ないように思えるが,実は多くの生物がさまざまな無機物を戦略的に利用しながら生存している.本稿では生体分子の機能を活用したバイオマテリアルの作製と利用について述べる.
